Sorry guys I need to ask a serious question and I don't have a noobier noob laying around that can ask for me so you guys get to flame him for his ignorant dumb question ;-p

Anyhow, I was wondering how you guys go about tracking the age of your cigars? I assume boxes are easy since you can just mark the box with a pen or pencil or whatever won't contaminate the rest of your humidor but what about things like 5 packs and especially singles? Also I should say upfront that I remove all the cellophane from my cigars figuring that makes it easier to keep the humidity more evenly spread over the cigar. So, for example, when I first started reading these boards there was a lot of talk about the Don Pepin Garcia Blue and Black labels and that people really liked them but that the Blacks needed a lot more aging than the Blues. So my first week some singles were for sale and I managed to get 2 Blacks cheap. Then just this week I get two more DPG Blacks. So now I have 2 cigars that are a month old and 2 that are only a few days. Is there a good way to mark a date on the band maybe so I know which ones are which and how old they are? Maybe there isn't much difference at only 30 days between them but what if 6 months from now I get 2 more...

I know I could use a journal to write things down like when they were bought and how much etc but how do I track the individual cigars themselves? Maybe some sort of small sticky label I can attach to the band with out touching the cigar itself? And is it okay to use ink or pencil or some sort of permanent marker and then put these in your humidor. With smaller boxes these singles will be on top of each other and cigars will wind up touching each others labels.... So I'm curious how do you guys do it? Thanks in advance for any advice you may have for me and again I apologize for not having a noobier noob for you guys to play with;-p:-k

I take a fine point sharpie, date them wherever is easiest, most often on the tail of the cello, I don't tend to remove, who cares.

I have taken some of the cedar sleeves from the Purple morados and slipped them over some "naked cigars" either bought or sent in trade, then wrote on the sleeve.

written on the bands with same marker.

Yes I keep a log as well, most receipts , if remembered.

All this tells me is when I got it, that's all. Hard to tell how long that cigar could've been around, received some in a trade that were marked by a BOTL here 10 yrs ago.

One of the many advantages of leaving the cello on - you can put on a little round sticker (Staples, Office max) with a date on it

also - protects your sticks when your drunk and rummaging around your humi looking for that tat you want to smoke

writing on the band?? lame.........cause I'll mes up and poke a hole in the cigar

also....a spreadsheet is invaluable once you start creeping towards 500+ smokes

Leave the cello on, it is porous after all, and mark it with a Sharpie. If it really bothers you, IOW if you are that anal, clip the open end of the cello. [sarcasm]

They have blank cigar bands you can wrap around sticks and put the dates on. If you're aging cigars long term, I'd just leave the cello on. The protection is worth the difference. I'd only remove the cello if you want to age them short term as they seem to age faster this way (to me at least).

Buy blank bands

onlinelabels.com - most expensive, but easily best, IMHO

http://www.bobramstad.com/BBB/  - if he's still got some left, these are decent and very cheap

HF - med grade, med cost

And leave cello on

What he said. They breathe just fine in the cello. Plus it really helps protect the cigar over time.

Okay guys thanks for the advice. Looks like I'll start leaving the cello on and I'll get some of those blank bands. Don't want to write on the Cello with a sharpie if the Cello is porous. I'll start a spreadsheet to start tracking the things I'm interested in, age, cost, if it was a gift and who from etc.
