I miss smoking... haven't had the time I used to to devote to smoking cigars so I'm looking to get into smoking a pipe...

I used to smoke a pipe when I was younger but had no idea what I was doing....

to save money I am planning on picking up a couple of corn cobs... is there anything special about a good corn cob that I want to look for? Is there a breaking in process for corn cobs? Do I just use a standard dr. grabow filter for it? and finally, what should I be using to clean it?

Also, when I used to smoke a pipe I had a terrible time burning my tongue... I smoked mostly aromatics I think so perhaps that was it... anything I should be looking for in a tobacco that would help me avoid tongue bite?

Other than that, I've been reading the whatcha smoking thread for you pipe smokers and that's given me a pretty good idea of some different stuff to try... I'm excited to get back to smoking more regularly again...

There is no breaking in a cob pack it light and smoke it. Just use your standard pipe cleaners. On tobacco it is up to what you like if you want a cheap aro that does not bite buy you some Lane 1-Q goes 2.50 an ounce. You can try va's and vapers, Balkans and englishes. I say try them all to see what your taste is.

Cobs are simple no break in.

Try virginias, vapers, english and balkans find what you like. Important note, flake medallions cake and plug need rubbed out and allow 20-30 minutes dry time. That and not puffing (burning the tobacco too fast) will help the tongue bite. Some swear aeros don't bite I say they do plus they SMELL better than they TASTE. I smoke to taste not ROOM NOTE.

Don't go crazy buying bulk till you know what you like.

If you decide you want to smoke aromatics, try an EA Carey pipe- it may be the best out there for avoiding burn, but they are not cheap.

Hey Jamie,

at the mothership, they have "pipe tobacco samplers".

I'm looking to try a corn cob and some tobaccos myself mainly for winter smoking.

Which one?

Davidoff Luxury sampler

or the

Sutliff English sampler

pretty sure I'm not going to be into aromatics

thanks

I'll have to check that out I didn't see the samplers yet....Sutloff I believe is a cheaper tobacco, But I've never smoked any.

Davidoff is quality that I have smoked, so without checking my initial reaction would be Davidoff.

Sutliff CD Blend (won off auction here) is one of my n00b tins. Not bad, but not much to compare it to-PA, shpo blend. But I'm enjoying it.

Davidoff does have it's fans here....

Hobbits Weed is an awesome aro. It's pretty much the only one I smoke anymore.

There is a lot of pipe tobacco better than Davidoff imo, Cornell & Diehl, GL Pease, McClelland, Samuel Gawith all make very good pipe tobacco. My favorite is the frog Morton series from McClelland.

thanks for all the tips... headed to the local drugstore this afternoon to grab:

corn cob pipe

pipe cleaners

tobacco

anything I'm forgetting? Also, are filters something I should be using or do those just get in the way of flavor?
