I had an applicant that wanted to take one week off after working three weeks. He was very qualified and we needed to fill position so I said OK as part of the interview......but then when the time came he was upset that I wasn't going to pay him vacation time!!! At my company it takes a year to qualify for paid vacation time and that was the deal. Sorry bub. And next he wanted paid for jury duty after he got back from his time off. When I said of course you can have time off for jury duty, but with no pay, he mysteriously did not qualify for selection.

In Florida, no person summoned or accepted to serve on any grand or petit jury in the state may be dismissed from employment because of the nature or length of jury service.

Jury duty leave is unpaid leave in Florida

This may be different in other states.

Our policy is to allow make-up hours or work from home so employee can maintain their income. The State pays the jurors but the amount is a joke. If not being paid by employer is a hardship in a long trial, the judge will usually let you off but you name is thrown back in the hat for a subsequent shorter trial. Some companies have sick leave or jury duty leave policies and employees that have a track record with our company usually get some extra consideration.

It's unpaid here in IL also though one of the companies that I worked for would give me 8 hours of pay if I signed over my "payment" from the government for serving.

That was a no brainer as at the time the government pay for the day, plus my mileage to the courthouse worked out to about $15.

Signing over the check was more of a "here is the proof that I really served" and not just used it as an excuse to get out of work.

Forgot I started this one.

Question: what do you find to be your biggest professional challenge in your current role?

Answer given to me: Well, I don't want to be racist, but..... (The rest edited due to the un believability of the rest of the answer)
