Going to my son's Promotion Ceremony next month in Washington State. I want to get a "real camera" to have some really nice pics of the ceremony , family and the beautiful area where he stationed (Whidbey Island).

So, I know nothing about SLR cameras. I don't want to spend a fortune and want one that I can learn the basics quickly.

I have looked at a Cannon with an accessory bundle for around $500.

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Canon-EOS-Rebel-T5-DSLR-Camera-with-18-55mm-75-300mm-Leness-32GB-Bundle/45231581

I realize this an entry level camera but is it a good camera for a fair price ?

any advice would be helpful.

Thanks

Been buying my wife nothing but Canons (and one Nikon) since the digital revolution started......she's loved them all.

I don't know crap about photography (wife does) and like ZRX says, Canons, especially in your price range, are really cool because they can be used (easily) by beginners, but have enough advanced features for higher skill levels.

Heck, you would be amazed at what something like this does these days

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Wide-Angle-Recording/dp/B00AWYN0BU/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1439479377&sr=1-1&keywords=Canon+Powershot

got my kids each an earlier model of the above a few years ago.....they love it

Wheel,

I have a Canon EOS T3i with the 18-55 lens. I also bought a 70-300 zoom lens that cost more than the bundle… there are plenty of lenses for it, and more accessories than you’ll ever probably need.

The T5i is the later version of the camera I have. They take amazingly good pictures, they are simple to use, and have enough features to allow you to get more sophisticated if you’re so inclined (or as you learn more about photography and the camera’s abilities).

That said… put it on auto, point and click, and you’ll get amazingly detailed photographs. $500 for that is a great price. Mine was closer to $600 at the exchange a few years ago. I say you should pull the trigger.

Go Nikon. In the long -run you will be much happier. Canon is meh unless you get into their professional models..

I bought my wife a Cannon rebel DSLR like 5 or 6 years ago. It has been very dependable, easy to use and produces great photos. Three are a variety of lenses for it. Old Cannon SLR lenses fit it.

One piece of advice I got when I was shopping was to remember that the camera itself doesn't change much brand to brand. The biggest differences are in the Glass, and that's where you can end up really spending some bucks.

No matter which one you get you're going to need at least a 500 power lens to make your wiener appear larger.

Lets get this thread off the gaydar and back on track...

You know Jetblasted knows his stuff about cameras. I'm sure he'll tell you the same thing: Whether you go Canon or Nikon, you won't be disappointed. Most pro's will tell you it depends what you start with.

I suppose you mean HE, as in Jetblasted, and yes he uses Nikon, but he acknowledges that there is little difference between the two, aside from Nikon bodies still accepting really, really old lenses. Canon made a body switch many years ago, so their really old glass won't fit the new bodies.

Jet can speak for himself but I think he really likes Nikon glass better than canon. That said I don't think you can go wrong with either as well.
