I'm seeing videos on youtube about them... But I'm not planning to watch any of them.

I abhor award shows like that.

With that said, I've heard a lot of good things about last nights edition.

I might watch some of those youtube clips.

But I never heard of Green whatever that won best picture.

Saw Green Book last week. Saw it for two reasons:
1. I knew a little about the backround of the story & coming from a strong Italian family with New York City roots, it intrigued me.
2. Knowing how the Black athletes were treated in the south when their teams visited, i wanted to compare that to the musicians.

I am sure the movie took some liberties, but overall i really liked it. I thought the acting was superb & realistically could see some of my family portrayed throughout the movie.

I will defiatly see it again to catch the parts I probably missed.

Growing up in the 60's, I worked at my Dad's grocery store, located in an all-black neighborhood in south-central L.A. My dad hired a few of the older men from the neighborhood, most of whom retired from jobs as porters on the Union Pacific. They told me about segregation throughout the states, not just the South, and even in SoCal. They said there was an informal "book" that listed safe places and places to avoid if you were black. Our store was located about a quarter mile from Central Ave. During the 40's and 50's the Avenue was THE hotspot for all black nightclubs that featured all the major black jazz ensembles and artists from that period. Moms Mabley, Big Mama Thornton and Sugar Ray Robinson lived nearby and were customers...

The existence of this list was confirmed by the parents of my wife's high school friend. Her father was a LA County Sheriff's Deputy. They were connected to black performers who travlled frequently and said that even after the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964, into the 80's and 90's, there were still places throughout the US that were hostile to black people....

hostile would have been an upgrade from restricted.

I had the good fortune to work in my grandfather and uncle's men's clothing shop (Roxbury neighborhood of Boston) off and on between 1965 and 1980, ages 12 through 27.
After the "right ways of life" lessons from my parents, that work experience had the most influence on my views on races and cultures, and the positive impressions that have stayed with me.

and the people with whom I worked, and even customers, were impacted by the relationships formed with me and my relatives as well...a story for another thread some day.

I remember the "colored" signs on water fountains and bathrooms in the south. One guy I worked with around 1960 was complaining about an upcoming 1200 mile non stop trip to Florida. When I asked why they just didn't stop one night on the way, he told me there was only one place on the way where they could- Brown's Motel - and it was usually full-up.

Hehehe... but this post was just about watching the Oscars... or not.

I haven't watched a movie in a long time... well, except I woke up early the other day and couldn't get back to sleep, so turned on the TV and Django Unchained was on... so, sorta watched that... but with the sound turned off. 🙂

my take is that this is a movie, written and produced from their perspectives...don't expect historical and thorough accuracy...it's measured by entertainment value...you want accuracy, watch a documentary or read a book...

I watched the Oscars this year, to see if there was a reaction or response to the all-white criticism of the awards and academy a couple of years ago...it looks like they went overboard to try to address the issue...

the lack of a host was not apparent, though...didn't miss one...
