in the 70's, football emphasized the running game on offense and smash mouth dominant defenses, hence legendary nicknames were bestowed upon top tier defenses - the Fearsome Foursome, Purple People Eaters, Doomsday, Steel Curtain

pass first offenses were not the name of the game...that happened in the late 80's, with the 49'ers and Joe Montana

Air coryelle had a bit to do with it earlier than Montana.

That was the early 80's... and how I became a 49'er fan. I was 12 when they won their first SB in January of '82.

Fours did it when you could pummel a qb. Montana too. Today’s qbs are coddled. Soon they will wear flags and play in to their 60s shattering all stats making them hof worthy.

I’m sure that those QBs who played in the 60s 70s and into the 80s think MANY of the QBs playing today couldn’t take the punishment they had to endure.
A few exceptions.........Big Ben, Steve McNair, a couple others...

Back in da day, defensive lineman used to slap the chit out of the OL................Deacon Jones having a Black Belt in that particular martial art.

Fouts piloting Air Coryell were innovative, but didn't win big...they had only a few playoff appearances...

it wasn't until Bill Walsh coached Montana/Young and Rice to several Super Bowl wins in the early 80's (ty MACS) that pass first spread offenses became the mode of attack in the NFL...

league and fans loved this more exciting brand of football, so rules were slowly changed to reward the passing game and hinder defenses...

honestly, although I grew up with the run first macho defensive style 60's - 70's NFL, today's game is more entertaining and allows exceptional athletes to showcase their skills while reducing the incidence of injuries to the most valuable player on the field...yet we still see QB's like Luck retire before their time

yet at the same time as rules changed to open up the offense, the defense adjusts...such is the nature of the back and forth in sports.
Today's "coddled" QBs seem to be dropping like flies every year now. They get hit by wicked fast ATHLETES now, and get their joints separated routinely.

This year the trend toward D adjustments is becoming noticeable. Lots of top teams have D's that actually stop offenses.

Point is that there are eras that evolve and a great QB from one era does not shine in another era...unless he is athletically adaptable. So Johnny Unitas and Tom Brady types would not be stars in 3 years if the trend toward slick, quick, strong armed QB's emerging now continues...Mahomes, Jackson, Watson et al. Cuz that's the direction...for now!

I worry about mahomes longevity.

if it was Jackson who dislocated his kneecap, I'd agree to worry. He often runs by design.
Mahomes is more of a situational runner and can morph into a pocket passer as he ages...in my opinion.
That can be done on one leg. (see Brady, Tom.)

the players today are bigger, faster, stronger...I remember the days when a 300+ lb lineman (Roger Brown was the first) was a rarity...weight training was optional and off-season training was not common...

now just about every offensive lineman and most defensive linemen weighs 300+ lbs and some of them can run a 4.5 40... and players train all year long...
