Sheila, long hair on women is the way to go IMHO.
"Hate crimes, in my opinion, carry harsher penalties (and should) because they are seen as more heinous then regular assaults and murders."
Shelia, if I murder your partner because I want to kill and like the way it feels, and I premeditate it, I stalk her, I plan it, and then I carry it out and kill her. And someone else does the same thing, the only difference being that they did it because she's a homosexual, should they get a harsher sentence than I? According to your logic, the answer is yes. I simply can't square this logically or rationally. It's pure emotion... There's absolutely "nothing" logical about it, and after all, isn't that what the law is about? Fairness? Logic? Impartiality?
“If I'm robbed, its obvious that the criminal just wanted my money.”
Sheila, what if I decide only to rob lesbians? (As I make my demands, I’m overheard chanting “I’m here, you’re queer, now give me you wallet!”) And I do this to punish them, should I be charged differently than someone who robs people indiscriminately? Or more appropriately stated, should someone who simply robs someone for money as opposed to their sexual orientation (I prefer 90 degrees…) should get a lighter sentence than me? The gay bandit?
“If I'm beaten up because of my race, religion, sex or sexual orientation, it's because the criminal wants to intimidate me.”
Shelia, if you’re beaten up for reasons other than your race, religion, sex or sexual orientation, do you believe the person beating you is not trying to intimidate you? I’ve been beaten and not for being anything other than myself in the wrong place and at the wrong time, and let me tell you, it’s pretty damn intimidating having someone beat you. Have you ever been beaten? I speak from experience, do you?
”Hate crimes are civil terrorism. Their heavier penalties are levied to try and disuade the populace from fighting against itself. “
So again, if I murder someone because I don’t like them, and someone else murders someone else because they “hate” the group they are a member of, they should receive a harsher sentence? So do the statistics show that more people are killed because they’re hated for their group affiliation? Or otherwise? I would think more people are killed in non-hate crimes? So why not go after the larger portion of the murders? Why not levy harsher sentences for those who commit murder that is NOT associated with hate crime? Wouldn’t that dissuade more people? Wouldn’t that save more lives? I’m not saying that this should be the case, I’m simply applying your logic to the question.
“Minorities sometimes don't have the community support to defend themselves, so does that mean it's ok for the majority to do what it wants to them when they just want to pursue happiness just like everyone else?”
Ummmm, the last time you checked, were you a human being? I think the current murder and robbery laws apply to you then. Suppose I decide to only have sex with goats from here on in, should I have special status? Should people be prosecuted more strongly if they attack me? Because I’m a goat hoarder?
“In my opinion, no. Desegregation didn't happen without the help of the national guard; hate crime laws are a natural step for the law to ensure that we all just get along.”
Yes, and those laws should be applied to people, ALL people equally. I believe the operative phrase here is “equal justice under the law?” Why should you have special justice? What about my goat fetish?
