Adroomi, is that a literal English translation of the previous sentence you wrote in Chinese? Regardless of everyone's politics, indeed that is a date to never forget.

What these students did was one of the most significant events in China's history. I would say it was one of the most significant events of the 20th century. Not insofar as what it did then, but rather in the way that it is shaping the 21st century.

For thousands of people to sacrifice their lives for democracy and freedom is first of all the things dreams are made of, and second of all an inspiration to the rest of the world.

Sixteen years ago these kids took to the streets knowing that they would die. Sixteen years later, their sacrifices are not in vain. Look at where China is today. This country has a long way to go, but they are the most rapidly developing country in democracy, industrialization, and world economic stand. The events that we are seeing today, such as the belief the China will be the worlds economic superpower in the year 2025, and the havoc they are wreaking on our own system are a direct effect of the democracy movement of 1989 by these free thinkers and dream chasers.

China would not be rising in power and status as it is today if it had not been for the dream of these kids to one day live in a country with freedom and democracy.

Teenagers in China today carry cell phones, and wear Levi's jeans. They buy designer clothes and drive American cars. They travel to and from other countries, and due to their new found freedom to travel, China's Aerospace industry is the fastest growing in the world. China has a little over 600 airliners right now, and are expected to have over 1500 within 10 years. China is tearing down it's "walls" that it built 600 years ago, and coming out to greet the world.

All of this thanks to some radical kids that died for the love of their yet unborn grandchildren and their own country. If you think we are patriotic, you should meet a Chinese person. They truly LOVE their country and will die to make it better.

I'm in Bangkok now. I came here to meet a woman I know. I mentioned her before in a thread a long time ago. She lives in Singapore, and is from Beijing. Later this week we will go to Beijing together to pay respects to her fallen friends. She was 20 years old the week that she marched on the square. Now at 36, she's travelled the world and done her part to bring money and a name to her country. She carries with her the scars, to include a couple of bad ones that remind her of her dream, and of watching her friends fall.

The Romanized statement I made above is this:

"People of China

Do not forget the children

that died for you

Long live the Republic."

Adroomi,

File these comments under the category of "just keeping it real."

The only place in China where any protests related to the Tiananmen Square incident are allowed is in Hong Kong. No commemoration of any kind is being allowed in Beijing. When you go there later this week, you might want to seriously consider keeping it real low key.

The Tianamen Square Massacre as it is commonly refered to outside of China, is still considered to have been a "counterrevolutionary riot" by the Chinese government and they point to the economic growth China is experiencing as a direct result of the continuation of a stable one-party state and the squashing of the riot and any like it.....Not because of the dream of these young kids, some of which are still in prison.

There is absolutely no mention of Tianamen Square on Chinese news websites.

Just to put China's 600 aircraft in perspective:

America Airlines has 996 aircraft right now.

Delta Airlines has 542 aircraft right now not including its commuter airlines.

Southwest Airlines has 417 aircraft.

Air France has 377 aircraft.

Statisically speaking, when you have "1" and add "1", you have 100% growth. When you have "100" and add "1" you have 1% growth.

Statistically China is growing rapidly. China is changing slowly.

The Chinese government states that China will become an industrialized nation in 2050. You have them as the world's economic superpower by 2025 if not sooner.

You are getting a bit ahead of things. Most of China still does not have purified drinking water or sewer systems.....But they're working on it and fast.

I have seen documentaries about Kent State and it was a terrible tragedy. Never should have happened. When it happened I wasn't even 2 years old. Even though I wasn't even 2, like I said I have seen a documentary or 2 about it as well as some reading on it. There have been a lot of unneccessary tragedies in our country....

Kent state=tiananmen square? Now I really want to know what you're smoking Rick. In one case the chinese government killed on purpose. In the other a group of young gaurdsmen, fearing for there lives, over reacted.

If you don't think so, lets see what you do when a mob rushes you. People are killed all the time by crowds that don't even mean to do so( can anyone say Who concert or british football). It was a tragedy what hapened at Kent state but to compare the two is silly.

you are right.

the commander who sent a bunch of young guardsman out to face a peaceful demonstration on a college campus with loaded weapons made the right decision.

of course police trained to handle an unruly crowd keep their weapons holstered, but they should start shooting into the crowd.

i believe one of the girls that was murdered was a long way off on her way to class and that commie pinko bitch, who was probably instigating the crowd from where she was, should have been blown away. fucken hippies.

that'll teach her and the rest of those peacenik, unamericans protesting the bombing of cambodia not to disagree with the president.

you've opened my eyes to the glory of being a true blue american and as the current administration said "if you aren't with me, your against me."

next time people gather out side a building where our glories leader is speechifying, to protest, lets blow their asses to kingdom come.

Kent State, May 4, 1970: America Kills Its Children

Twenty-five years ago this month, students came out on the Kent State campus and scores of others to protest the bombing of Cambodia-- a decision of President Nixon's that appeared to expand the Vietnam War. Some rocks were thrown, some windows were broken, and an attempt was made to burn the ROTC building. Governor James Rhodes sent in the National Guard.

The units that responded were ill-trained and came right from riot duty elsewhere; they hadn't had much sleep. The first day, there was some brutality; the Guard bayonetted two men, one a disabled veteran, who had cursed or yelled at them from cars. The following day, May 4th, the Guard, commanded with an amazing lack of military judgment, marched down a hill, to a field in the middle of angry demonstrators, then back up again. Seconds before they would have passed around the corner of a large building, and out of sight of the crowd, many of the Guardsmen wheeled and fired directly into the students, hitting thirteen, killing four of them, pulling the trigger over and over, for thirteen seconds. (Count out loud--one Mississippi, two Mississippi, to see how long this is.) Guardsmen--none of whom were later punished, civilly, administratively, or criminally--admitted firing at specific unarmed targets; one man shot a demonstrator who was giving him the finger. The closest student shot was fully sixty feet away; all but one were more than 100 feet away; all but two were more than 200 feet away. One of the dead was 255 feet away; the rest were 300 to 400 feet away. The most distant student shot was more than 700 feet from the Guardsmen.

rick, do you know the max range of an m 16? Have you ever been 60 ft away from a mob? I am an old fat guy, but i can cover 60 ft in a few seconds. I can't believe a group(many as you put it. How many? you don't know!) of guardsmen shooting for thirteen seconds(who had the stopwatch?) would only kill 4. If they were trying to kill they would have gotten more like 15 each in 13 seconds. But they didn't. so maybe you are making up facts. Do you think the army or the nixon admin. ordered them to do it? Like in china?

There is no comparison between the two. 8 track is wrong. It's not your language that offends, it's your stupidity.

me dumb ass. you very, very smart.

one day me be smart like you is.

one day me believe kent state was a defense response because the students were going to kill the soldiers with their bare hands or the secret knives they had hidden.

do you trip over things a lot?
