Did some exercises in the back yard, then went for a 5+ mile walk. Left at 0615 returned at 0750.

bittersweet day... going to pick up the kids last homework packets... teachers said they aren't even going to collect them, just something to occupy them over the summer...

both teachers requested we bring the kids by so they can wave goodbye...

my daughters first words when she woke up this morning were "when's corona virus gonna be over?"

spent another $100 on fishing stuff last night...

wife won't be thrilled but it was some super necessary stuff...

couple of new catfishing reels, couple of ML rods for trout/bass, 6 super dupers, 12 krocodiles, and 1300 yards 14lb test for the cat reels...

and I smoked my last cigar at the vherf saturday, so I gotta talk to her about spending money on cigars for the first time in half a year...

I should probably just text her all this from the lake... or just send her a link to this thread...

Since the boy wouldn't go for a walk I took him on a bike ride. He has a hard time saying no to this trail, it goes right next to a train yard with a good dozen sets of rails and stuff you ride over all at once. Then on the other side they have old railroad stuff setup in a small park and you can climb on the cars.

6 mile ride.

I think I'm gonna get myself a new bike. Bought mine in 97 and it's pretty well shot. Definitely doesn't roll well anymore, both rims are bent, suspension is siezed, and it doesn't shift anymore. I could probably refurbish it with new components but I think 23 years isn't a bad life for a budget bike I bought in junior high.

Off to Costco. Lost one of my hearing aids last week and need to replace the older model lost one or buy a new pair. Can't decide what to do, but I really want a new pair. On the other hand, now is not a great time to spend $1,700. Will also have to see if using a Costco credit card will extend the warranty on whatever hearing aid bul**** I have to spend money on. Ugh!!ram27bat

Seems I'm not the only one and came late to the game.

Brother in law is service manager at a Trek store, asked him to keep any eye out for a trade in. He said they literally can not keep any inventory in the store sub $1500-2k and even those only last a few days. He had told me they were stupid busy, but I figured he was talking more about service.

Gave him a list of what I want, with measurements and stuff. Said keep an eye out for a trade or even new if affordable.

Called another bike shop about an hour away asked how their sub $700 inventory was. They said only kids bikes.

Picked up a free Schwinn Criss Cross a couple months ago and then ordered a road bike for the wife over a month ago from Amazon warehouse deals for around $420, that finally shipped. It was originally around $650-$700. Glad I snagged it when I did. Take a look at Amazon warehouse deals, if you can setup the bike yourself, good deals. It just takes longer to ship.

It's true. There were really only a few bikes I was interested when I searched and they were all way overpriced for what they were. 10-15 years old and sure light wear in good shape from what the pictures said, but asking $4-500. Initially I thought maybe that was the going rate on them, since I'm looking for a bike with higher end components to last a long time maybe it was a $1500 bike in 2005 and worth $200 in new bearings n stuff. Nope. The three bikes I opened new tabs on from CL were all around $300 new 10-15 years ago.

I'll just wait it out. I've waited 23 years to replace mine, I can wait.

I do need to exercise more on my weeks off. I get plenty while at work, but the weeks off doing nothing have taken their toll. I like riding bikes and would like to get back into it

I looked when I was at Walmart grabbing worms when I took the boy fishing. They had about 5 bikes on the rack, mostly kids bikes and one womans cruiser bike.

I'm looking to buy something nicer anyway. There's a huge difference between bargain hubs and bearings and derailers and stuff. I got a lot of years outta my budget level bike, but everything's broken or worn well beyond its spec. I bought the wife a nicer bike about 8 years ago. She rides it enough, at least as much if not more than I ride, and other than airing up tires and I've lubed bearings in the pedal set and steering tube once, it's been flawless. Hubs haven't loosened or started to bind, wheels are straight, derailers perfectly accurate. Initially I was kicking myself for spending almost $500 on a damn bicycle when we're not cyclists but now I'm getting it.

Kid got a bike built in 2014 for his birthday in 2018. Budget bike. When we were riding today I noticed the sound of unlubricated or poorly tensioned bearings. When we got home I found both. I had a set of bearings that fit, but the races were scored. Not quite notched/lumpy but not perfect. Lubed it up and he said it "feels like the bike has more power"

I'm staying well under $1k, ideally $600 max, but looking for a 20 year bike. I think beyond that price range you start getting into specialty bikes/components that are well beyond my needs. After I sent in my last student loan payment I've been treating myself to a lot of toys. I think the bicycle will be the last one, then it's on to more grownup stuff.

Went grocery shopping today. Didn't buy anything that wasn't on the list for the first time since I had to take over shopping duty.

I've made so much food in the last few months there wasn't much room left in the chest freezer and all my tupperwares were in use. Took a few things out to thaw for my work week, go back tomorrow.

Also dog was going nuts in the garage trying to dig her way behind the snowblower and spare furnace. Got my flashlight out and saw nothing, started moving stuff and heard a hiss. Figured a possum or raccoon was back there so I grabbed the 22 revolver from the pantry, put on overalls, carhartt jacket and a welding glove and went back to find it. I'll let a possum go, but raccoons get shot. It's a damn cat. Orange with white stripes. Made its way to the ground under the pallet racks and I can't get to it, and wife would be very unhappy if I shot it. So I killed the lights in the garage, cracked the door 6" and hopefully it'll find its way out. Not gonna go in the garage till tomorrow.

If it's still there, I have a fat person's grabbin stick I'll try to drag it out with and toss it outside. IMO a wild cat is no different than a raccoon but wife's a cat lady...

That's what brother in law said, wait till they're taking in consignments and buying/selling used bikes in a month or two when people realize they're not gonna ride much or they bought on credit n cant afford n stuff. Or more likely late fall/early spring.

But if something new comes in that meets my wants, I'll buy. I'm not THAT patient. Plus, I think my rear hub is gonna sieze up eventually. The races are deeply pitted and it rolls like it's a gear, vibrations increase with speed. I've taken it apart and lubed it up but it's so worn. I probably put 10k miles on this bike if not more, and it was not built for that. First few years I had it were spent in the trails around and into a quarry, it took many 10ft jumps and 40-50mph rough downhill runs. I can't do that kinda stuff anymore, but the bike is too beat up to keep up on paved trails now.

Just like leasing a car and buying gap coverage you can purchase a new vehicle and buy what is generally called "new car" coverage. It protects you against the front-loaded depreciation. Should your vehicle get totaled, you make a claim and get a brand new identical vehicle of the current model year. IMO, it is a necessary coverage and it only costs about $5/month.

That sounds pretty reasonable.

I know two people that wish they had that, one had a three day old suburban that was creamed by a driver that had Allstate insurance in Texas. They jerked him around so much his attorney had him explain the problem and turn the vehicle back to the bank to settle it out with Allstate. He though it might spoil his credit rating buy after a year it was no big deal.

The other, a nurse that graduated with my wife with a BS Nursing degree. Like my wife, she bought a new Camero. She had a zero money down loan and ended up paying the bank more than the insurance settlement to close the loan.

Never a good idea to do that zero down. As soon as you drive away, you're upside down on the loan. No bueno.

Signed my loan doc (1 signature) and gave the check to the dealer today. I set up auto payments and the first 1 is June 1st. No sense dragging it out.

Gap insurance is a good idea.

Forgetting the insurance, whats the difference between putting a bunch down if you have it or keeping it in your own hands if it is a low cost loan. Zero or low interest loan I tend to not put a lot down even if I can. Whats the difference? Lose it now or later. You put the equity in to your car. Gap insurance if you don't have the coin or are risk adverse.

Wild cat in the garage still has not moved an inch. Even its tail is in the same position.

Its smooshed itself so tightly into the corner behind an upright on a pallet rack i don't really know if it can even get out. There's not much room there, its tied to the floor and the cinder block half wall, with the same rack perpendicular on the other wall.

Valid point Tim. I used my paid off trade as the deposit. Financing is 2.19. Negligible on a 60 month loan. Basically $30 a month.
