How did you get to projecting others reasons?
I'm making the following observation in the interest of keeping an interesting discussion (I'm enjoying this) from drifting into comparisons that do not line up...
home fires and automobile crashes are not the same as home intruders and armed robbers on the street.
The first group of events is comprised of 100% pure accidents.
The second group is intentionally planned by perpetrators, the victim may be random, but the act is controlled by a human being. Unless arson is involved, the two groups are not comparable...
Now, to me, if one is likening guns to insurance, then they are also reacting to fear of the unknown/uncontrollable by purchasing arms.
And that is fine, but on some level there is a motivating fear. Perhaps guns assuage that fear somewhat?
Sure, I am "afraid" of a fire or accident and protect against the loss with insurance, but that insurance is required by law to get a mortgage or vehicle so fear plays no part in the purchase, though the insurance helps one's comfort level.
I have less of a fear of violent mayhem though I would be in denial to believe it is not possible. But I have a choice whether or not to purchase deadly protection.
It would take some level of personal fear to do so. But it is not like fear of accidents, at least not for me.
