Basil Hayden Dark Rye

Nice dark liquor with just the right amount of sweetness. Port influence is most obvious.

Much better offering than the original Basil Hayden Rye. Very nice for $32 bottle, IMHO.

I agree with you on the Dark Rye, love it and don't really care for the Rye offering. $32 a bottle is sweet...we have to pay $45 here now for any of the Basil bottles (went up $5 around last year).

Think I may have given you some bad info on the Deanston 12 and Singleton 12. Had been a few years since I had checked the prices but what I'm now seeing in the panhandle is around $50 for Deanston and $42 for Singleton. Deanston at $50 would be a no for me and Singleton at $42 a strong maybe.

Funny you should post this now, as I was about to post that I was drinking Glen Moray 12, a $39 Speyside single malt. For me, and that’s the caveat, it’s a steal at that price. Typical Spey profile, but just a touch rough around the edges, which appeals to me in a similar manner that Wild Turkey 101, Tito’s and Belvedere 100 do - a great base spirit with a bit of a burn.

If we’re able to get together in OB, I’ll bring a bottle.

Still going to try the Singleton, though.

Oh, and that $39 price tag was Alabama ABC price. So probably somewhat cheaper in Florida.

Poured myself a small glass. This stuff is good, no doubt... not as good as I recall, though, and not worth damn near 3 times the 12.

And I like the Aberlour 16 better, and it's about 60% the cost.

A little more smoky and oaky than I recall. I was drinking (at a herf) when I tried it, though.

I’ve got the 16 Triple Wood and came to the same conclusion with it. It seems I should try the Abelour, though....

Talisker 10,

Very interesting pour. Not over the top with the peat but a bit of an edge to it. Liking what I'm tasting.

The apple notes make this quite interesting / different.

That's actually some good whiskey....the apple does give it a great taste but nothing like that artificial shat!

Been working on a 5th of Sazerac rye the past week.... better than expected.

Baysil dark rye didn't work for me...not a fan of the port blended in.

I was pleasantly surprised at how much apple there is...but I kinda like it. Good change-of-pace.

Conan,

Hope you found the FR to your liking and very sorry to hear about the loss of your older brother. Guess I missed something or would have offered condolences prior to now.

Again, sorry for your loss.
