Detroit Bankrupt: Kevyn Orr Asks Federal Judge To Place City Under Chapter 9 Bankruptcy Protection

DETROIT — Once the very symbol of American industrial might, Detroit became the biggest U.S. city to file for bankruptcy Thursday, its finances ravaged and its neighborhoods hollowed out by a long, slow decline in population and auto manufacturing.

The filing, which had been feared for months, put the city on an uncertain path that could mean laying off municipal employees, selling off assets, raising fees and scaling back basic services such as trash collection and snow plowing, which have already been slashed.

"Only one feasible path offers a way out," Gov. Rick Snyder said in a letter approving the move.

Kevin Orr, a bankruptcy expert hired by the state in March to stop Detroit's fiscal free-fall made the Chapter 9 filing Thursday in federal bankruptcy court.

I thought I heard that on the Spanish language tv but I thought I misheard.#-o
The folks I really feel for are the vendors expecting payment for services/products rendered. Good luck with that. Been there done that. When it comes to bankruptcy everybody else comes first during the restructuring.

My money's on Baltimore or Stockton next.

Yep… it's entirely his fault, and has nothing to do with the current POS running this country. 🤦

Can't they solve this whole problem by just raising taxes on the last couple rich folk still within city limits?

Bankruptcy can be a good thing. Sure people "get screwed", but not really. They were already screwed when their bills were not timely paid. Boo hoo hoo. Part of the price structure of a good or service should include risk of nonpayment. If not, prepayment or collateral can be required. Instead of blame, look for the root causes and try to rectify them or change the way business is done. Here, we have a city that has been on the decline for a good 30 years. Let's hope it can pick itself up- doubtful in the long run.

Just a way to get rid of the pension liability people have worked their whole life for. "Unpaid bills" are the least of the problems. They filed because they have court Monday to guarantee the pensions, despite bankruptcy, this suspends that hearing

I'm surprised that Stockton hasn't filed as well. They've been in bad financial shape for quite awhile too.

Maybe we can get the Chinese or the Saudis to buy Detroit...

Detroit would fall into the Detroit river.

Chicago would fall into Lake Michigan.

You have to feel bad for all the atheists, that lacking a real Hell, have been using Detroit as a substitute.
Where will they go now?
Newark?

By the time Detroit filed bankruptcy it was already way too late to turn things around. Got a better way for it to start over and have the opportunity to make good for itself?

Newark might be good. And there's always Oakland. But the agreeable weather discounts Oakland as a truly appropriate Hell.

How about East St. Louis?
