Loaded up the pitbike under my softopper. I never considered the possibility that it wouldn't fit until that moment.

Maybe a half inch to spare. Barely fit. But it fit.

Hitting the road.

Well, that’s kind of the point! When we test kids with ADHD, it’s important to observe the threshold of their concentration, but also distress tolerance when attentional resources are taxed.

Also, it’s a diagnosis that carries a lot of weight. We want to take our time to make 100% sure that the diagnosis is accurate, especially because stimulants can hypothetically be harmful and that the diagnosis will follow them for a lifetime.

90 degrees. Gon' be hotter tomorrow, so I may as well be on the water where it's a little cooler and there's an ocean breeze, right? About 25-30 miles off shore should do it. :-"

Reserved a spot on the 24th, too... no particular reason for that date... they just had an open spot on the stern.

Cheno, ask for a DNA test for your son.
We have been dealing with this for years with our oldest granddaughter. For years was doing well on prescribed meds, then the basturds changed her meds and all hell broke lose and for years after subscribing her meds that was making her worse, one of the organizations working with her, told us to have DNA testing done. We had this done recently and the results showed her in the Red Zone for danger on present meds. In the process now of having her meds adjusted.

Wishing you all the best with your son.

Certainly, stimulant medication makes a world of difference for kids with ADHD.

To answer your question, yes to both. Having a diagnostic label like ADHD can both open doors (e.g., services in school, stimulant meds, etc.), but it can also shut doors (e.g., working for certain government agencies).

There’s also the harm that if ADHD is misdiagnosed, it could prevent a full solution from being found. For example, let’s suggest that an individual has an autoimmune disorder or health related etiology for their inattention. Psychostimulants won’t help, and they will stop searching for their answer upon getting an ADHD diagnosis.

This is just one example among dozens of why ADHD should be carefully diagnosed.

Also, to answer your question, Im in neuropsychology (I.e., a weird halfway point between neurology and psych). While I mostly do testing with aging adults with dementia, I also do some ADHD testing with kids with complex situations (e.g., ADHD testing with a kid who has a brain injury).

This morning my nephew said his ear hurt.

I asked him on the inside or outside?

He walked out the front door, came back in and said both.

I told his mother she was saving way too much money for his college.

I, personally, staved off any and all medication for 54 years. In my persoanl opinion, I think I am far better off because of it.

There's a reason that every country in the entire world does not allow pharmaceutical companies to advertise except for the USA and New Zealand. There's also a reason that every pharma commercial spends half their advertised time on disclaimers and warnings.

Cheno... if you can keep your kid off drugs... it will be better for him in the long run. That's a fact. Don't even doubt it for one second.

I don't take drugs unless essential. Polly about 7 yrs ago I started having blackouts. One minute just normal going on, next minute waking up on the floor not knowing where I am or how I ended up in the ambulance. Drugs or alcohol was not part of the equation - if I did them that would be an easy conclusion.

So I was told to see a neurologist and he did numerous tests to try to diagnose the blackouts. First neurologist came to the diagnosis that I have epilepsy and prescribed a low dose of anti seizure med. I didn't want to take it because my opinion was he was wrong. Nobody in my family has epilepsy. Epilepsy is usually an inherited issue. It's not something you just catch from a toilet seat. Again, that was my uneducated neurologist opinion.

He understood my concerns and explained that the med that he was prescribing was a low dose and has been around for decades. No real side effects, children, elders, and even pregnant woman take it without issues. He also said maybe I was born with epilepsy but it didn't crop up until I got older. I did not want to accept that.

Yeah, OK Doc. I'll take the medication but I want a second opinion. He was all for that and I saw another neurologist independent of the previous one and he ran the same tests. He came to the same conclusion. F$ck. I'm 0 for 2. They said that they will do follow ups every year to two but stay on the meds for 5 years and we will reevaluate it then. So I kept taking the meds as prescribed. 5 yrs go by. No seizures. See the neurologist again after doing another round of current tests thinking - 5 yrs no issues... Cool. I can stop taking the medication.

Sat in the room with him thinking he will take me off. I say to him, "No seizures in 5 yrs, we good to go? Can I stop taking it?"

His reply was the recent brain scans are similar to the previous ones so his diagnosis is still the same. Then added "Why do you think that you have not had any seizures since you've been on the medication?" Damn it... I can't disagree with logic and facts and didn't have a good reply.

I trust him. He doesn't pull punches, he speaks openly and frank, he breaks down things so an average non medical person can understand and he knows where I stand on my hesitation for taking meds.

Long story short, I'm not a fan of taking meds unless it's essential. Shoot, I don't even take over the counter pain meds, allergy meds or cold or fever meds unless I'm completely miserable.

That's a good one.

Reminds me when my kids were young. I showed them Google maps with the satellite pictures. You could zoom in to my house and see the house, back yard, picnic table, cars parked in the driveway and stuff. (The picture was probably taken a few years back).

Once my son saw the picture on the computer he ran out of the house to the back yard and I'm thinking... where are you going? He then came back inside about a minute later and said "Dad did you see me waving at the satellite? Refresh the picture so we can see it."

I was taking a swig of ginger ale at the time and it almost blew out my nose.

I hear you, Bucko... I said I went 54 years. I now take a statin and baby aspirin. Plavix for another 6 months.

I don't want to take any of it. 2 Cardiologists tell me I need to take the statin and the aspirin for the rest of my life or risk another clogged artery. I 90% believe they're both full of sheit... and if I stay the hell away from sugar and carbs I'll be fine.

There's that 10%, though... telling me "Good luck staying away from sugar and carbs". So I begrudgingly take it.

Yes. I guess I take the meds knowing I will indulge once in a while.
