Howdy Bernardo, MACS, DX, DED, RAM and all of you lovable azzhatz. Temps here were nice this morning, in the 70s but it is about 90 now. We’ve been holding it below 95 this week and the humidity hasn’t been as bad so I’m grateful for that. Blessed Day to you all.

Grandson's soccer team, coached by my son, is in a tournament and have played every night this week, won 2 of 3, qualifying for the semifinal tonight. Win and they'll play in the final tomorrow night. Lose and they will play a consolation game tomorrow night for 3rd place.

A lot of soccer in one week, and because it's AYSO, each team must provide assistant referees to run the sideline. My son asked if I could do this, and I said sure. I'm one of the two ARs for the team, so I do every other game...knees are getting wobbly, even tho the team plays at the under 12 age group level...getting too old for this...walking everyday doesn't quite prepare my body for the short sprints needed to keep up with play throughout well-contested hour-long games. The heat's not helping...

Happy Thursday Evening to All!

Hanging in there, we may get power by the beginning of next week, but we’re fine. Say a prayer for the people in North Carolina. It’s a mess.

Hang in there, Gene. I've watched a lot of the footage from Western NC & East Tennessee. I used to travel a lot around Elizabethton (Carter County) & Unicoi County, Tennessee. I've been throughout that 5 or 6 county area of far East Tennessee.

In truth IDk if some of those hole in the wall places will ever recover. They're devastated.

Been feeling slightly under da weather... hr and bp slightly up, slight headache, tired. Things seem to be creeping back to normal, tho.

Go Corona Kings!!!

I played soccer when I was a kid but it didn't click. I was not into soccer for most of my life. When my nephew was young (he played through high school) and kids were young they played soccer up until Jr. High. It was then, when I was able to appreciate it. The strategy, the roles of the various players. I actually enjoyed going to the games. My son did outdoor soccer and indoor soccer in the winter.

The tiring thing for me was picking them up after school, rushing to eat, going to practice at one end of town while daughter practice was at the other end of town. The tournaments, the traveling games in various towns and finding the fields. Playing on wet fields in the rain. All that jazz. But that's a selfish attitude. I am so glad I was able to be there for all games and nearly all practices.

One team my Son was on, the coach was a soccer family. All his kids were in various leagues and really good. At one practice, my son was on defense and sometimes out of position. The coach was rather intense. "Evan, you're out of position! You need to be here... you need to protect this area..." He was rather stern. At the end of the practice, the coach approached me and apologized for maybe scolding the kids too much. I didn't take it personally nor did I think my Son did.

On the drive home, I asked my Son... do you think the coach was being too intense? His reply... "No, Dad. I was out of position and the coach knows that I can be a better player and I know I can do better. He's just teaching me on the mistakes that I made."

This was coming from an 11 yr old. Uff... I had no reply, other than watery eyes... my kids are growing up.

Since we're talking' soccer...

Go Keiki Gold!

Didn't have AYSO when I was growing up so when our h.s. started up a soccer program when I was a senior, thought "how hard can it be to run after a round ball and kick it?" Went out for the team and kinda, sorta found out that the game was a LOT more difficult than I imagined. I mean, just putting the ball into play was head spinning for me:

Other than the goalie, can't touch the ball in the field of play except on throw-ins.

Feet can't lift off the ground on a throw-in.

Must use two hands on a throw-in.

Ball must come from behind your head on a throw-in.

No spin can be imparted on a throw-in.

I gave up after the 2nd week.

Then, years later, while I was in college, I was asked to play in an adult "senior" league. The league was intended to be only for 40 year olds or over but there weren't enough teams so they begged my friend to form a team and they would waive the age minimum. So a bunch of us 20-ish year olds thought, "sure, we can run around with the old farts." The vast majority of us had never played organized soccer before so we learned how to play and the rules, on the fly.

The problem with college kids and Sunday morning sports is that most of us normal boys spent the weekends doing youthful activities. As our captain used to say, "I pray we can field at least 7 guys at kickoff and 11 by halftime."

Played for about 9 years. Also got into running and while training for my 2nd marathon, developed plantar fasciitis in both heels. No bueno. Cortisone shots. Stopped running and soccer. But, I had fun on the pitch. Made a bunch of friends (...even with guys on the opposing teams...) and most importantly, learned how to play the game...at least strategy-wise. We never practiced after the first few games so I never learned to properly kick the ball. I eventually learned how when I coached my 8-year son and watched videos and read books. Once I did that, sheesh, I could actually kick the ball far!

I'll still watch soccer on TV and marvel at the ball skills but after awhile, get bored and change channels.
