Hero, maybe not.

But the President did and does accomplish one thing that many have overlooked. He's living out the age old military rule of "leadership by example".

Some of his biggest detractors want to shy away from what they call a political stunt and focus on his speech that day. As a veteran myself, he could have landed and then took off again and said plenty.

What did say with his actions? "I trust you". That's it. For the Navy vets here, you know that the average age of those who work and serve on a carrier is 18-22 years. By making a landing on the deck of a moving carrier, he was saying with actions what all other Presidents could never say with words. "I Trust you with my life". By doing that, he doesn't just send people into harms way by power of his title, he earned it with the ones whom he sends.

So while we here in "civlant" play armchair Presidents, this man, THE Commander in Chief is actually doing what he is called to do .... LEAD by example. He didn't send us into battle, he sent them. And with the exception of one coward punk who fragged his comrades on the opened few days of the war, I don't see any deserters.

But what I have heard are the whinings of those who never did serve, or the twisted logig of those who may have, but forgot where they came from.

Off my soap box now.

logig should have been spelled logic, sorry.

Sorry Rick....I was referring to your statistics and information. I am sure the Globe, Star, Enquirer or other tabloid could make a lot out the information you provided here.

FredS Anyone that has been on boats or 16 years has earned my respect. I was on nukes. USS Plunger (SSN-595) Also did tad spec op on 2 637 class boats, Pogy and Guitarro don't remember the hull numbers of those. The reason those who serve do is so that anyone can express any opinion.

Re: "a holocaust of american youth, on the pillar of ego of the men in charge. between westmoreland and nixon's sec of state (the name escapes me) men were sent to die in a "war" we were not prepared to win, and shouldn't have been involved in to start with."

Kennedy made the commitment, Johnson was responsible for the huge build-up, Nixon got us OUT of Viet Nam. His Secretary of State was Henry Kissinger. However, your's could be a persuasive argument for the uninformed.

may i inform you that kennedy was so pissed at the cia over thier lies to him about the bay of pigs he was going to make some changes and bring in some new blood. his commitment in vietnam was a handfull of "advisors" and he was never going to do what johnson, who without the vietnam he hung himself with, passed more civil rights legislation than any president before or after.

i'll bet you think lee harvey oswald was the lone gunman.

kennedy being killed was the first coup in this era.

rehnquist performed the second without a kill.

rick: I'm appalled at your post! How dare you walk on the bodies of our brave men who gave their lives for our country to attack our President. What if a relative of one of those men was to read your asinine post. " I have done my job " the only thing you have accomplished is to make a very LARGE ASS of yourself. JonR

Rick, my point is that Viet Nam was a war initiated by Democrats and ended by Republicans. Your posts intimate that it was solely a Republican boondoggle. In your response you changed the subject to the Kennedy assasination/coup and Johnson's civil rights agenda. Both worthy topics for discussion but not germane to your claim of:
"a holocaust of american youth, on the pillar of ego of the men in charge. between westmoreland and nixon's sec of state (the name escapes me) men were sent to die in a "war" we were not prepared to win, and shouldn't have been involved in to start with."

Rick,

You wrote: "leadership by example"? i hope not, i'd hate to see the entire military go AWOL."

You missed or ignored the point that I making simply to get a one-liner in. That's a shame.

So I'll say it again. We ask those young people to serve in dangerous situations working with dangerous machinery. In case you don't know, landing a jet aircraft on to the moving, pitching deck of a carrier is no easy and safe feat. But, it gets done every day and night all around the world by people barely old enough to drink. Some aren't even legal yet.

And for them, having the Commander in Chief say with action and not words, that he trusts them with his life is something that they understand clearly.

Now you may not understand leadership by example Rick either because you never practiced it or were exposed to it. But believe me when I tell you as a veteran, those sailors know it and their responses aren't scripted. They don't get paid near enough to lie about something like that.

Or perhaps it's all those absentee and military ballots that get the democrats so riled up all the time. Either way, the President is liked by those who serve us in the military. And that is a fresh breeze compared to the stench that rolled from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in the two terms preceding him.

Don't like it? No problem, make sure to vote. I know I will and so will the military personnel of this country.

Now "esteemed" Congressman Waxman D from California, a joke for a Representative, has called for a GAO investigation into the President's visit to the Abraham Lincoln CVAN 72.

This guy is about as anti military as they come.

i had a chap stop at the house to do an appraisel. we talked for an hour or co, enjoying a cigar and coffee. he and i agreed on almost everything.

i was soon bored, and had to get back on line to wake me and get the fire going.

can you imagine how dull a conversation is with someone that agrees with everything you believe.

let's rumble!! but let's not make it a personal insult, like nasty old man, and walking on the dead.

not necessarily improving the discourse.

i try very hard not to use the responses that run through my head that would be taken as a personal affront.

i can, but chose to be more polite to my fellow posters who see the forest, but not a tree.

i hope i don't get any more insulting then that.
