Johnny Cash and June Carter-"It Ain't Me Babe" (Dylan)

Elvis Presley-"Blue Suede Shoes" (Carl Perkins orginal)

Rolling Stones-"Mannish Boy" (Muddy Waters)

Elvis Presley-"Mystery Train" (Little Junior Parker)
"My Baby Left Me" (Arthur Crudup)
"Lawdy Miss Clawdy" (Smiley Lewis)
"Good Rockin Tonight"-(Roy Brown)
"I Got a Woman" (Ray Charles)
When Elvis started out in the business, he did all covers by great and unknown at the time Blues artist...He was at his best doing the covers. Highly reccommend buying Elvis Presley "Boy from Tupelo" CD to hear Elvis at his best.

Van Morrison "Glorida" (John Lee Hooker)

George Thorogood "One Scotch, One Bourbon, One Beer" (John Lee Hooker)
"The Sky is Falling"

Could go on and on regarding Blues covers by White Rockers, such as Rolling Stones, who owe their very existence to the great Black Artist.
Eric Clapton has done many great covers of Muddy Waters, Howling Wolf, and John Lee Hooker such as "Little Red Rooster"

Love this subject....lets see some more.

DMV, Living Colour - Back In Black? Interesting. I always liked Living Colour (Cult Of Personality ownz me on Guitar Hero LOL).

Just googled it...

Man, he's really straining. Maybe it sounds better not-live...or is it just me? I still like their music. I was at the prime of my teenage youth when Vivid came out, and it was a great change in style during the 80's...especially given the ethnicity of the group.

There a lot of great cover songs, many of which aren't coming to mind right now, but one that regularly sticks out for me is Mrs. Robinson by The Lemonheads.

Dwight Yokum "Truckin".

Off of "Deadicated". A pretty good collection of Grateful Dead covers by various artists.

A mention here for Robert Johnson. Argueably on of the most covered artists ever.

If I remember right he recorded 21 songs almost all of which have been hits or classics for other artists for decades.

Gin Blossoms cover of Christine Sixteen (KISS) f/ KISS on Letterman.

Speaking of Gin Blossoms...Johnny Cash's Folsom Prison Blues.

Here's a forum related song...any Primus fans?
Primus - Have a Cigar (Pink Floyd)

I like the Encomium CD, a tribute to Led Zeppelin. Especially like the Stone Temple Pilots. It's too bad Scott Weiland can't keep his chit together.

What about The Sundays version of "Wild Horses" I like it because it reminds me of the roller coaster scene from Fear.

I think PtRD nailed it.
When the original artist, in this case Bob Dylan, changes the way they play the song, to the way it was covered, that is the ultimate compliment.

#9 I disagre on Disturbed completely. Like their albums quite a bit, and got a chance to see them at Ozzfest. They put on a good show, too. Are they breaking any new ground? Not really, but few artists are these days. Even more rare these days is just good straightforward rock. Seems like nearly everything is country, rap or mall music like Timberdink and Spears.

#19 Never cared for the cover of Turn the Page. First real concert I saw was Bob Seger, Against the Wind tour. They did such an amazing job with that song during the show I can't imagine anyone else playing it. Besides, that song really needs the saxophone.

#28 Go listen to Faith No More's version. You'll feel better.

As for great cover tunes, hard to fault anything SRV did covering Jimi Hendrix. As much as I like my hometown homie's work, SRV usually made it even better.

One that seldom gets a mention, but just rocks...Iron Maiden covering Cross-Eyed Mary. I also like Devo's version of Satisfaction, but more as a fun novelty.

RE #34

Anything Leon Russell does he does better than the original. Including himself. His live performances are just leaps and bounds better than his studio albums, and his studio albums were excellent to begin with.
