I do not own any revolvers, and though my guns are loaded they need to be cocked before firing (pistol and shotgun) neither one of my kids is able to do this, as of yet, once they are strong enough to do so , by then they will probably have their own and be able to know how to properly care for one. I do agree that handguns in the hands of kids is a bad idea, a 5 year old is trouble enough, hand them a gun and.....

I do think that people have passed on responsability and that's were we are now. Guns do not kill people, people do, cliche, yes, but it's the truth. Although if a 5 year old kill another kid, it is not his fault, but the parents. All of my guns are kept loaded in a safe place, out of the reach of my kids, but close enough to be used for protection, now sometimes you gotta excersise your brain, sometimes you might just want the robber to take your tv and stero instead of risking a wild shoot out, come on people lets use our head!!!

One question,where do do people live where home invasions are norm? Most burgulars will break into your home when you're not at home. They will then take your firearms and use them elsewhere. That being said,I also have firearms but keep them unloaded. X

Not to add to any fire here, just offering an option. Gun locks are cheap and can be easily defeated (by curious kids and/or criminals after they've stolen the pistol). If you're relying on a handgun for defense I'd recommend spending a little money and buying a purpose-built pistol safe. Many now are easy to open VERY rapidly, without even looking at the locking mechanism. These are much harder to defeat too, and they can even be bolted down to prevent theft.

About choosing to use a pistol over a long gun for defense... Well, that's another can of worms I won't open now!!

Best home defense weapon is a 12 gauge pump shotgun.
Racking one into the chamber has a very convincing effect and that alone can be enough to end a situation peacefully. Also the chances of missing your target is less when you throw a bunch of #4 pellets (best for first shot followed by a 00 buck if a second is required to stop your advisary) at the target.
Even expert pistol marksman can miss a live target at 7 yards under times of stress,low light and confined quarters.
But the one question you have to ask yourself is can you live with the fact that you have taken another persons life, even if you are justified in doing so.
If you dont think that you can then you are better off with a large dog trained to do your dirty work for you.
If you must use a pistol just remember the triple tap "Two in the chest one in the head keeps you alive and makes them dead"

3 nights ago, here in Tokyo, there were about 9 or 10 teen boys (around 15-18 years old) making quite a bit of noise outside my veranda at 1:00 am in the morning. I went outside in my bathrobe and proceeded to chew some b*tt. They stood there with their heads down and apologized, then left my house area. Try that in America. You'd be dead as soon as you walked up to the group. That is most likely due to the fact that all of the youngsters would shoot you with their guns as soon as they saw you walking out towards them with your pistol in hand "protecting" your property. Guns, no guns, tanks, hand grenades, whatever.....there is a problem in America. Americans live in fear. Why is that? Why do Americans feel the need to protect their lives with a gun in their home? Why do we so easily kill each other with no regards to human life? It's not the guns that are a problem, there are plenty of them here too, we just don't use them on each other.

Adroomi, if you go out of your house to discuss a disturbance with some teenagers and you go armed, YOU have already committed a crime. Making too much noise outside your house is hardly justification for lethar force regardless of WHAT state you live in! If you feel that the situation is too dangerous to go outside and talk unarmed, call the police, and a real estate agent. I'm glad you are so enthralled with the expatriate lifestyle, please don't try to force Japanese values and laws on those of us that still live in the CONUS, as the hoodlums haven't been raised in Japanese culture.

The people have had full-on gun control in Japan for a long time. They were also a repressed/opressed people prior to WWII. There is no comparison in cultural development.

However I get your point Adroomi. There is very little respect in young persons. Even my generation was lacking in respect though we still had some.

As for needing guns? I carry on one my side every day. I am paid for placing myself in situations where it is dangerous, even life threatening. In 21 years, I have yet to fire a bullet at anyone. Been close, been shot at but unable to return fire due to location and backdrop. But never fired a round at a human.

Now do you think my odds of being in a shoot out situation are greater than that of the average citizen? I think so. In 21 years have I pointed my gun a people...lots. Have I had to do so off duty...a few times. Of those off duty times, could I have ignored the situation and never have gotten involved...probably.

The point is...I don't sleep with a loaded gun under my pillow (always a bad idea...always). There's a loaded and locked gun nearby...but if my chances of getting in a shootout this year is 1/100...my odds must be really low at home.

I have lot's o fire arms but I think that torture is much more Effective, have fun.

Adroomi, I live in IL. And I have abosutely no problem giving a group of teen agers a ration of **** if I do not approve of what they are doing.

I have done this more than once and have always received apologies and I am never armed.

In Texas anybody can walk outside carrying any thing they damn well please provided of course they stay on their own property. Those of us with a license to carry can go pretty much anywere with our guns.

A big problem with kids/teens these days are thier parents. There are far too many parents that let their kids run wild. These are the ones that back talk adults and may eventually pull knives or guns on a BOTL trying to get some sleep at 1 am.

I don't live in a high crime area, but that is not to say we don't have crime. Crime is everywhere, if you think there is no crime in your neighborhood you better think again.

Many crimes committed are crimes of opportuinty. Keep your doors and windows locked at home and in the car.

Racking the slide on a shotgun will most likely scare the bad guy away, but he may return or go to someone elses house that may not be armed. I say shoot the mother f'ker when you can to ensure crime goes down. If you don't he/she will continue until caught or killed. IF they do go to jail they will be out in a few months. I say end thier life before they end yours or your loved ones.

I do not live in fear, yet I'm practical. I know there are dangerous elements around (bad gang problem in my area). Why do I feel the need to protect my life with a gun? Are you serious? Well, for on I value my life and the life of my family. Do I need to go on?

Off duty I have stopped several personal attacks, as well as a car jacking, because I had a firearm on me (presented but not fired). If this makes me a violent blood thirsty American then so be it. I'm here to talk about it though and have no regrets.

I guess it just comes down to how you value your own life and how much you're willing to protect it. That level is different for most and that's fine. I'm comfortable where I am though.

All three of my Kids by the time they were old enough to hold the gun up were learning the Gun Safety's and live fire... 2 of the 3 have been through the safety course's (Hunter Safety) proper teaching is Key.. although because my ex wife was not much on Guns... I did keep the handguns in the house with trigger locks on.. now is a different story and one would not know where I keep the few handguns I've attained over the years... but when we hear of youngers kids coming to visit this is first thing to collect and put away properly.. it only takes a split second.. and also as I said above and others have also.. proper training and handeling is Key...

I'm a fan of guns, I love them, then again it comes with the job......my point in the message is that Americans live in fear, and that's unfortunate. Kids have always raised hell, I know I did, but the level of damage that the hell raising has risen to is unacceptable (the loss of human life). It's a socio-economic problem that has now made the US one of the most dangerous places to live. Don't believe that?, check your CIA factbook. Of course it's still a bit safer than some of my stomping grounds here, but it's only going to get worse. I may get killed by a 14 year old in Burma next week who's trying to protect his way of life and his property from what he sees as the "enemy," but at least it'll be poetic. More so than being killed for the same reason by a 14 year old in America, the country that is supposed to be "number one."
