From your posts on rick's gun's kill post it appeard to me this might show another point of view about the benefits of guns. No malice intended.

You know, someone always has to bring up the "small children" card. My dad had guns in the house when I was a kid, took me with him to watch while he was shooting, taught me right from wrong and safety then as I got older taught me how to shoot. I did the same thing with my "small children", 2 boys and 2 girls. It's called value time spent with your children. Before someone brings it up, I do other things with them also. After the "small children" card the "is that all you teach your kids" card seems to follow.

Just kidding. But dont lump all of us scared Americans together please. I, like Bassdude, live in a place where i do not fear for my life. I dont own any guns and never will. And i am smart enough to know that it is not like that for everyone,be it here in America or in Asia. You cant judge the way all people are by what's going on in your own little part of the world.


As far as gun saftey goes....i do believe in keeping your guns locked up. But this is coming from a guy who's 14 year old nephew shot his face off with his dads .30-06 and died soon after. This was 4 years ago and my Brother-in-law hasent touched a gun since.


And as far as teaching your kids to have respect for a firearm.....you can teach all you want,but curiosity cant be helped in some kids. It's just a fact of life.

I'm sorry to hear about your families loss 'sooner!

I have several guns; some loaded in my house. I have been trying to stay a step ahead of my daughter. When sehe learned to crawl; I moved them from the corners of the house. When she learned to walk, I moved them to the top shelves of my closets. Soon she will be able to reach them.

Its funny that this came up; last night I fetched a certain pistol out to show a friend of mine at work. I placed it on the kitchen table after removing the magazine and verifying that it wasn't loaded. My little girl walked up at said "what dat?". I told her it was a gun and asked her if she was allowed to touch it. She said " No, dat burn me".

I'll probably buy a gun lock then, and I will definitely continue to teach her about guns and gun safety.

For about 16 years I have worked instructing people on the use of small arms. Its part of my job with the Navy and I love it. But what I have seen in the past few years is not to be blamed on children but people who say they are parents. First of all I have two boys 11 and 17 and I have had weapons for 16 years. I own every thing from a 9mm Berretta to a 7.62X54R rifle and about 18 others in between. I do not own these for any other reason than the joy of collecting and shooting them at the range. But just like the parents who complain about the TV and what’s on it, why not look at them for the fact they should monitor what their kids watch. It is these people who blame honest and responsible gun owners for every thing. Just in the past few weeks we have had a father who twirled his revolver and shot his 2 or 3 year old in the leg. We had a grown man shoot a .50 cal black powder hunting rifle thru his wall and missed hitting a lady in the head. No guns and kids are not the problem!!! Dumb A## adults are the problem. I have taken my wife 11 and 17 year old sons to the range and they all can shoot very well. My 11 year old knows he is not to touch a weapon with out me there. They respect weapons and what they can do. I’m not saying gun locks are what everyone needs. But then maybe a better screening for people who own guns and have children would be better for both parties. This point will be bounced around for years and with all the shootings going on until parents get off their a##es and be parents it may never be solved.

Thank you Gunner. And your right about better educating the young ones. My nephew was educated. He had been hunting with his dad every year since he was 7. Started off hunting rabbits with a .22 rifle. Hunted year round. Rabbit,quail,dove,turkey,deer,and had been elk hunting in Colorado the last 3 years of his life. I feel like i need to clear some things up here. He shot himself because he got caught up with the wrong kinda crowd one night. He was busted for smoking pot and was scared and ashamed. Peer pressure can be hell for a young boy.

Im all for someone owning guns. I live in N.W. Oklahoma so i know what would happen to farmers crops if we couldnt hunt. But id like to stress that everyone who owns a gun to make sure they are being safe. Nothing good can come from being complacent with gun safety.

...Sooner, sorry to hear about your nephew. I had a few friends in school (years ago) and a few friends in the not so distant past that took the same course of escape. It's never easy, and sometimes you wonder to yourself how YOU made it all this time.

I'm not against guns. I love them and they are fun to shoot. I collect them.

There's a problem in America though. Gun control nuts, and gun enthusiasts (personally, I'm a bl*wjob enthusiast) all dance around the issue and argue back and forth all day long, but they still avoid the real issue. Why do we kill so easily in America?
