According to Fox News, Castro has Parkinson's. I always figured the old coot was being kept alive with the organs of 20 year olds. Apparently he's had it for a while. [sarcasm]Good thing he has free health care.[/sarcasm]

too bad the usa doesn't have free healthe care. we are the only country that is considered one of the only industrialized nation that doesn't, while cuba is considered a third world country and they do.

why are we ranked 184 in a list of countries where records are kept. 6.5 infant deaths per 1000, cuba has 6.33 infant deaths per 1000 infants.

MarkQ,

That's sad my friend.....funny....but sad.

Rick,

I pay $206 USD per month for full health coverage that includes two dental check ups per year, and an annual physical exam. Any emergency dental exams are covered as is any emergency room visits.

I get reimbursed 80% for everything up to $10K USD and 99% for everything over that. I have a $500 USD deductable on in-patient care.

I have an automatic $100K payment for any critical illness notification (cancer, heart disease, etc).

I am covered across the entire planet, and in every single country on Earth....except one.....the USA. If I want my coverage to extend to the USA, I call my agent before my trip and pay $400 per week for my coverage in the USA for a maximum of 30 days at a time.

Amazing how my insurance will not cover me in America.

Of course, a triple bypass in India would run about $3000 USD, so I can see the reasoning.......

Yeah their health care is fantastic, all you have to do to get it is give up your freedom and live under a dictatorship. Why it's all we can do to keep our Cuban Americans from defecting to Cuba.

LMAO

you might be correct that it is a dictatorship, but you really have no idea if it is or isn't.

you just open your mouth and let the crap come out, but you don't have any idea what's going on.

RICKA, I used sarcasm because his "free health care" is a sham. Sure he has it, but its not the top notch system he claims it is. Please don't tell me you actually believe Castro's propaganda. He also claims he has the smallest illeteracy rate, yet people escaping his communist paradise prove otherwise. If I had the choice between free health care in Cuba and giving my life savings here, I'd go broke thanks.

Read a book called "Red Diaper Babies" by Ronald Radosh. Radosh was born into an American Communist family, sort of. His parents were from another country, Poland I believe, but lived here. He was raised a commie and stayed that way until into adulthood. Then he took a trip to Cuba. Radosh is no longer a commie, he states his mind started changing because of what he saw in Cuba. Read it, and you might begin to understand.

Rick - I've never been to Cuba either, but the fact that there are boatloads of defectors trying to get here all the time convinces me it sucks there. Free healthcare or not.

Hell, even their star athletes defect here at the first opportunity.

Adroomi,

That is indeed sad.

My primary care physician recently folded up shop to work in the local hospital.

I asked him why, and he said due to costs of insurance.

That's the biggest reason why healthcare is so damn expensive in the USA.

It's all the F'ing lawyers man... a guy at work got into a motorcycle wreck and as he is laying on the ground, taking inventory of all his important parts a F'ing lawyer came up and handed him his card.

No "are you okay?", "Do you need a cell phone?"... just his F'ing card. I'd have wiped my *ss with it and given it back.

"costs of insurance ... That's the biggest reason why healthcare is so damn expensive in the USA."

I don't know where you heard this but it's big time bogus. The cost of healthcare insurance is a reflection of the cost of actual healthcare, not a different or additional cost. Most insurance dollars go to pay for Drs, drugs, hospital beds, etc; to say that insurance is going up is the same as saying the costs of Drs, drugs, hospitals, etc., are going up, which is in fact the case. Only a fraction of these costs are due to administrative costs, legal malpractice coverage, or lawsuits; most goes toward actual medical services.

America spends between 13 & 15% of its GDP on healthcare (almost 2 trillion per year), that's the highest in the world. So America has the best healthcare, right? In fact we rank 25th out of 29 OECD countries in infant mortality. Out of 23 OECD countries the US ranks 15th for male life expectancy and 16th for females. The bottom line is we spend more than any other country in the world in healthcare costs (which is near synonymous with insurance costs) and yet we end up getting less.

The data I used is sourced by M.D. & PhD in sociology Donald Barr, a practicing physician and academic sociologist, and is widely accepted.

If we spend so much and get so little, where does the money go? To administrative insurance costs, legal or malpractice costs? Nope, the highest portion of the healthcare dollar in the US goes toward heavy investment in extending the life expectancy for 80 year olds, because they have high rates of heart attacks, cancer, and strokes, which are amenable to treatment by expensive high-tech machines and new and expensive drugs. Because America has more healthcare technology, very expensive health care technology, we're the best in the world at resuscitating and prolonging the lives of Americans over 80. That's where the money goes, not to expanded insurance premiums due to law suits, that's a myth. The higher premiums reflect the wider use of technology to save old people, that's why health care costs are about 15% of GDP now days.

And this is why health care costs in America are soaring, and not because of higher insurance premiums; the premiums are higher because the services cost more and help fewer people. Services like prenatal care and regular pediatric checkups are relatively cheap, yet we cut back on those essentials and pour trillions into resuscitating dying old people with cardiovascular failure and cancer. Blame the not so intelligent designer, not lawyers.

All that aside... you must admit, lawyers suck.

Unless you're rich and need one. OJ's team was pretty good and so was Robert Blake's.

While I wish, for the good of the Cuban people, that the embargo would be lifted... I think possibly the other cigar manufacturers would be against it.

Cuba sells every one of its cigars every year. If the embargo were lifted, I believe it may cause a decline in quality due to efforts to keep up with the new demand that the US cigar smokers and those who just wanted to try them (now that they can) would cause. At least for awhile.

But that's just my theory.

I'm not saying litigation etc. doesn't add to the healthcare burden, just that as a percentage of overall cost it's fairly negligable.

I, unfortunately have have a lot of experience with lawyers from: criminal proceedings, real estate law, family law, maritime law, personal injury law, tax and investment law, etc. Most of them I have found to be incompetent and blatantly unethical. Over the years I have found that shopping really pays off. If you gain a basic understanding of the legal problem you have, then shop it around to 6 or more attorneys, one or two will be relaxed, condense your problem to a clear thesis, and estimate a cost for you; these are the ones who have a clue as to what they're doing. You can tell these guys right away from the majority who laugh nervously with their mouth and frown worriedly with their brow, claiming "sure, I can help you on this," then bill you for all the errors and blunders they perform in your service. There are good lawyers out there, but you have to find them, it sure doesn't work the other way around.

Socailized medicine is a problem, no matter who implements it. The biggest issue is who gets what care. Those who can contribute to society get the best care. That means that those who need it the most - the elderly, disabled and poor - get shafted, for the most part.

My MIL, who lives in Norway, has to come back here to get good health care. She is 70+ years old, lives in one of the richest nations in the world, and was told that the left arm pain she has been experiencing is just part of getting old. My Aunt Fanny it is. She is a nurse, and she knows just as well as I do that it is probably cardiac in nature.

In Canada kids with disabilities are put on a waiting list for services, sometimes years long. Our system is faulty, I won't argue that point, but I really don't believe that socialism, or nationalism, is the answer.
