There is no need to address the issue as long as the world continues to loan us money with the implied promise that we will ultimately massively raise taxes to pay them back. As long as the world believes they will get paid back with either taxpayer dollars, or Federal land there is no issue.

I hope there are good sales at the mall this weekend.

I'm not being sarcastic. Every generation has kicked this down the road and lived beyond it means because cheap credit is available. Our interest rates are extremely favorable as long as the belief exists that we will pay it back someday somehow.

When that confidence fails, we become Greece, Iceland, Portugal, etc who face the problem that they can't refinance/rollover their debt without paying skyrocketing interest rates. The important thing to do right now is maintain the confidence of foreign lenders and mutual funds that purchase Treasury bonds. If necessary, start more wars to destabilize the world so we still look like the best option as a debtor.

The other option is cut government spending in half and massively raise taxes. That is insane.

It's best to consider both sides of the fence unless you live next to ricka.

Or go fencepost on the issue and cut spending by 1/4, moderately raise taxes, and start a war or two.

Or better yet crank up our arsenal and just take from the rest the world. You want to collect? Come get it.

tee, i dont know where you live but here in memphis, every effing person in line at the register is paying with their government debit cards, they are 300lbs+ and go back to their hud housing. Its a massive problem in the south. Please dont bring up race because its whites, blacks and mexicans (not so much asians 🙂 ) not only that, the younger generation is a want it now gen, not a lets work hard and make sacrifices for later rewards type generation. you can waive flowers and sing kumbya all you want but until i see people who WANT to better themselves and not become a drag on society, i just cant believe we will change unless we are forced to.

I agree much of what you are saying and do not see what you are saying as tied to race. I also don't think you can waive flowers and sing kubwhatever to fix it. It will take work I just believe we have the resolve to fix things. I still think this country is great and believe in our potential. It is interesting that that is a controversial thought around here and translates into some sort of hope and prayer message rather than what it really is.

That does not mean everyone will go along with the changes or it will be easy. There will still be leaches that want their blood to be dealt with. I beleive we will.

BTW. Those people are fat because salt, sugar, and amimal fat prices have been artificially held down. It is cheaper to eat McDonalds than cook (healthy) for most people.

Are there really no Reagan Republicans in here. Folks that understand that saying our best days are ahead of us is not mutually exclusive to having hard work to do and hard decisions to make? Reagan understood that heavy pessimism brings negative results. Heavy optimism does not magically create success but when combined with the heavy lifting it is the best path towards success.

(note -I understand not all Reagan did was good particularly in regard to the deficit. I'm not dealing in absolutes here.)

To my knowledge the Clinton admin was the first to actually market entitlement programs and attempt to increase the roles. They actually advertised. I was pissed. They pressured states into doing the same. Leslie Neilson was the marketing face for Medicare at the time.

States were encouraged and even pressured into stretching the meaning of federal code into absurd interpretations to increase the rolls. Yes they did welfare reform but on the other side they were playing games. They are a big culprit in this.

TW,

Sorry to hear of the collapse of key lime water. Perhaps you will choose a more moral path now that your vice has been altered.

I have been planning on not having social security since I was around 22 or 23 years old (92 or 93). I did not make much money back then, but I started to save money in IRA's, payed off all of my credit card debt, and refused to live on credit (cards) again (that took around 2 years).

Me and the wife decided that we could only afford one child and she got spayed.

I only was able to put $75 a payday towards investments and the $500 a year told my kids education IRA.

I started a pre-paid education plan and paid for it.

I eventually was able to max my IRA's and put over %25 of my income towards savings/TSP.

I hear lots of whining from my fellow Americans about how bad things are, how broke they are, how they have no pensions, etc... BUT, these same folks are buying new iphones, buying cars and trucks they neither need nor can afford. Buying way too much house to heat and cool. But not saving near enough.

What does scare me is the national debt. I have done everything I can to be OK without Social Security, but if this country starts defaulting, my hard earned and saved cash will be worth squat.
