The death penalty does NOT deter crime.
The death penalty is NOT an inexpensive alternative to life imprisonment (due to the typical retrials, etc).
The Death Penalty is not allowed in my home state of Massachusetts, despite being passed TWICE by the majority of voters on election referendums.
The death penalty does not always provide the "closure" that many families feel it might.
But know this: a dead man will never be a repeat offender.
The state of Illinois must review each and every case on death row. The injustices brought to light in those four recent cases is enough to sound the alarm. But this ex-governor is not dealing with his conscience on this one. Rather, he is setting up a smoke screen. Otherwise, he would not have dropped this bomb in the eleventh hour.

Charlie, have you heard that Davis wants to put another dollar-plus tax on a pack of smokes? What will that do to stogies? I hate to even think about it. He screws up the states economy and now is going to try and make smokers pay for his ****-ups! He will get support for his stupid idea cause its politically correct!

Thank God for CBid!!

The governor did the only humane thing that anyone could do. It was wrong when the convicts on death row commited killed their victims, and I do not doubt they cause much pain and suffering. However, it is just a wrong for the state to kill them. Murder is murder and is wrong no matter who is doing the killing. If only more people in positions of power would follow this example our country would be a much better place.

Jon, I've been reading your posts today. You turn bad people into victims, whether Its domestic or foriegn matters. You have got to be a "Bleeding heart Liberal". Your views are so left wing Its incredible! You are a dangerous person, in my opinion. I hope you dont have kids for you to brainwash.

ditto what Mag stated... Jon you need to come out from under that rock that has you hiddin from the real world

do you think that incarseration and givin time these murders can be a changed person? statistics show that ex-cons who are released on percentage go back to Crime as a way of life... I have many friends who work in prisons and they say that many of the con's who get released tell them they'll see them in a few months usually when the weather starts turning cold.. what a way of life huh?? and the liberal belief that these people change???

I used to watch Pat Robertson's 700 club growing up as a Kid.. but when they fought tooth and nail to get that woman in Texas a few years back off death row because she became a Christian... I stopped watching the program Don't get me wrong I do like Pat Robertson and the group there.. I just did not feel it was right for them to try and save a woman and change Laws that are there for one person because she/he became saved... I think that is between her and God and each individual will be Judged by God accordingly... If she was saved then she went in Peace is my view of it...
but had they gotten this overturned then every convict in the US would be saved just for the sake of getting a lesser sentence....Thats not the way it works...

Ryan Was Wrong!!! and like Tailgator stated its a Smoke Screen just like Clinton Launching Missiles at an Outhouse in some BFE county because he was caught with his pants down... trying to take the heat off whats at hand....

see, i haven't posted for a while and they are jumping on you, and using the same language against you as they do against me. they are sad people with no rachmones.

remember khris kristoferson that bleeding heart liberal wrote a song called don't let the bastards get you down.

s Kristofferson
Don't Let The Bastards
(Get You Down)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They're killing babies in the name of Freedom
We've been down that sorry road before
They let us hang around a little longer than they should have
And it's too late to fool us anymore

We've seen the ones who killed the ones with vision
Cold-blooded murder right before your eyes
Today they hold the power and the money and the guns
It's getting hard to listen to their lies.

Chorus:
And I've just got to wonder what my Daddy would've done
If he'd seen the way they turned his dream around
I've got to go by what he told me, try to tell the truth
And stand your ground
DON'T LET THE BASTARDS GET YOU DOWN

Mining roads
Killing farmers
Burning down schools full of children
Fighting communism

Chorus:
And I've just got to wonder what my Daddy would've done
If he'd seen the way they turned his dream around
I've got to go by what he told me, try to tell the truth
And stand your ground
DON'T LET THE BASTARDS GET YOU DOWN

these chaps have a blood thirst. they want war. they don't know why, other then the moron running this country says saddam is a bad man, but Kim Jong Il, who has already threatened to burn us to the ground, or something like that and who has long range missiles and possibly atomic bomb capability, is not a threat.

what could possibly be the difference?

Jon, your view point and mine obviously differ, but I've got to ask:
If you consider ANY killing as murder, then how do you feel about war? And so we don't confuse the issue, let's forget about the probable war in Iraq. Let's look back at WWII. Did we (America) "Murder" those Germans and Japanese? If so, do you think we should have been punished?
I've met many pacifists who oppose all pending wars, but agree that certain wars in the past were necessary. I think that those individuals have their heart in the right place, but lack any sort of perspective and foresight, not to mention consistency.
The heinous actions involved with the killing of life are sometimes (oftentimes) necessary for the long term good. I know my grandfather to be a hero, not a murderer.
And a state which prevents further pain to innocent people is also a hero.

I have not yet resorted to personal "slams" regarding peoples political beliefs like some of you do and I'd rather not.

Mag, Hog, and Co: I suggest the "name calling" stop and whatever other slams happen to come off of your keyboard. Discuss things like you would in person not like you are an anonymous poster. Since we are all pompous cigar smokers, I'm sure we all have the necessary social skills that will allow us to do so.

I know damn well I can find fault with all of your postings and call you everything in the book but I choose not to because but It solves nothing.

CJ, If you are refering to the term I used" Bleeding Heart Liberal". I didnt make it up. Its a term used all the time on Radio & TV political talk shows. It wasnt meant to piss him off. Its a description only.

Jon doest care how bad the killer is or how many people have been killed. It doesnt matter to him!

Now here is one of his quotes on the matter of US citizens becoming traiters and taking up arms against against this country:

"I have the utmost respect for anyone who takes up arms against any government responsible for opressing millions of people"(the USA).

Now, how about this quote:

"Killing innocent people is wrong in any shape or form, but our armed forces are guilty of far more dead innocents than any terrorist could ever hope to kill."

Do these statements sound very Patriotic to you? They dont to me! Jon is too soft on criminals or enemies of this country. That is not good for our national interests.

Hope this makes my point a little clearer. Just my opinion.

I too have an opinion on the death penalty. Whereas I'm not familiar with the particulars of Illinois. I am against the death penalty for several reasons. First off,I find incongruent that in a civilized society where it is against the law to kill someone, that it is also legal for a govenment to kill.
Who gets executed, well, lets see. In the history of the USA,not one convicted murderer who was a millionaire has ever been executed. So what does that tell us. Only the poor get executed. Who comprises the poor? Mostly, Blacks,Hispanics and poor whites.
I am of the opinion that a convicted murderer should rot in prison for the rest of his/her life,so they can reflect on their crime everyday of the rest of their miserable lives and when they die they can explain themselves to their maker. Once a person is executed it is irreversable. There is evidence in many cases where that indeed happened. Also,in recent times DNA evidence has released many on death row and for other crimes.
Also in the storied history of the US,people have been executed due to the prevailing politcal winds of the time. To me this has always been a disturbing footnote in our history.
I am the first to wave an Amercan flag when the time warrants and the first to point out any irregularity in the government when it is also warranted. If this marks me as unpatriotic than so be it. X

It's simple. Let your daughter get gang-raped, draino poured down her throat, and split open like a pinata, then preach the good word of tolerance and forgiveness. Several of you act like the imposing of the death penalty is in the realm of the Salem Witch Trials and much of your arguments are based upon whether or not it is indicative of a civilized society. Who says being civilized is equivalent to good moral practices? Weak.....
With that in mind, I would like to read some of your "civilized" alternatives.....show us how you would punish them.
