I agree. However, nowhere in my post did I blame one side or the other. It was an attempt to remind people that there were 2 sides in that travesty and 1 of the sides happened to be their own people. Slavery has been part of human history since its inception. Only recently, in our more civilized world has it become taboo.

My wife's family is part Cherokee yet they never discuss, let alone complain about the fact that they were conquered by the "evil" white man. If not the Europeans, it would've been the Japanese or some other Imperialistic nation.

Hawaii is another case in point. Native Hawaiians basically hate us yet they could easily be under the thumb of Imperialistic Japan had it not been for the U.S. and her victory in WWII.

Dr. King wanted equality. We haved moved closer and closer to that goal since his time. Granted, we still have along way to go but affirmative action only creates larger rifts. As it stands, when a black man rises to a high position, the people around him question his qualifications. This is a step back in my opinion.

An act or rule which allows access based on a persons ethnicity or skin color is RACISM.
Doesn't matter the intent.

Affirmative Action is the Guilty Liberal reaction to past indescetions.
Not only does in not make things right, it makes things WORSE.
Promoting less qualified individuals will NEVER help matters.

So it is the attitudes of both sides that must be changed, and only a more educated mind can be an open mind and educated doesn't necessarily mean University and those who come out of University often leave with closed minds. I guess evolution will set the course. And the chat lines around the world will bread tolerance.

The educated mind relies on facts, and anyone can show "facts" or statistics to suggest that one race is superior to the other. Doesn't make it so.

In fact, it is the well-educated liberals who dreamed up the evils of affirmative action. Well intended, to say the least, but severely underachieving to the point of causing damage rather than mending relations.

We will never change the mind of bigots. We need to instead expose them.
Racial quotas allow bigots to hind behind numbers.

Racism is wrong, no matter what form it takes.

But we owe it to the underprivileged people of this nation, regardless of superficial differences, to provide them with the tools to succeed and escape their upbringing and the traps it comes with. Basically, we should give them the opportunity to be able to give back. For those that choose not to try and make a better life for themselves, they deserve what they get.

I only blame the Liberals when they are the cause of the problem, at least as I see it.

How would you define "underprivileged" and where is written or with what logic do we "owe" them. Don't get me wrong, I believe in helping my fellow man as much as possible but as with many things these terms tend to be subjective. In my mind "underprivileged" would have nothing to do with race but rather an individual's own circumstances.

John - I completely agree, hardship knows no color, race or creed. We should help everyone that needs it by giving them the tools to help themselves, but like many have said, money alone will never fix the problem.

No no no!! I don't agree with that! I'd say that those who "generally support affirmative action" are generally liberal. And those who oppose it are generally conservative (with exceptions of course)

Why do I, in a free society, owe anything to anyone, unless I have “personally” wronged him or her? If it isn’t my personal choice, but rather is MANDATED by the imperial Federal Government, isn’t that more in line with socialism? No offence taken, but very very American comments. One of the things I admire the most about America is the Idea of a 100% free will, fee enterprise system. We do have conservative views in Canada, just like France, England, etc. You could take England, France and the U.S., through them in a blender and Voilà, you have Canada. The Wild West only existed for a short while, but is proof that one man for himself doesn't work. There are sheep and Shepard in this world, I know, in my line of work, dealing with people; I have definitely separated the two. Robby, you are a Shepard and I tell ya, you will never understand the sheep, nor will I. I'm very much a capitalist, but I want to save the Wales too. I think a lot of Canadians are like this. We have less than 1/10 the crime rate and murder rate as does America, not putting the U.S down, but that is a fact. I believe it's the "if I have an intruder on my property, I have the write to shoot him", mentality. In Canada we check to see if it's our neighbor first. Now not all Americans are like this, but even Saturday night live makes fun of the one that exist, just as they do for the Bob and Doug Mackenzie types in Canada. I'd rather have Bob and Doug as my next-door neighbor.

Now I repeat I admire the US for it's free will society, but I don't admire the bad that comes out of having no social views.

how much longer do we have to apologise for what some people did in the 1700 and 1800's. i

Very well stated. A true testament as to "WHY" Affirmative Action and similar "equality laws" were put into place.
Those statements you refer to could have come from any average white guy back in the early '60s.
But today, those words would only eminate from a true bigot. Somebody that will never change their opinions towards people of color.
Today, we don't need laws that discriminate in much the same way communities did back then. We don't need Uncle Sam to force fit Equality or Diversity.
We have the MOST diverse country in the history of the world.
And those that CHOOSE to earn a living usually can.
For those that choose not to, there could never be a law mighty enough to satisfy them.
