Well... last year there was a large area of warm water right off the coast of SoCal that made the fishing incredible.

I'm hoping this year is as good or better. Hey... if the planet is being ruined... I may as well benefit from good fishing, amiright?

I like to watch "Planet Earth" on BBC America. Just heard that in the last 50 years, we've cleared almost 50% of the rain forests in the world.

I think this fact, coupled with the population growth, is more damaging to our environment. Trees use CO2 to make oxygen... I think removing our means to lower the CO2 levels as fast as we are is hurting us more than the emissions.

Volcanoes have erupted in the past and put more CO2 in the air than we ever have... yet when we had plenty of trees to use it, we went on 'bidness as usual', eventually.

As I said, our emissions are not helping, but I think cutting down all the trees may be hurting us even more. Put them together... and here we are.

The deforestation of rain forests is a problem. So is global warming. The question for me is what will be the long term results. There are many scientific studies that preach gloom and doom, but there are also studies that speak about change, but not gloom and doom. I remember when scientific studies predicted something similar to an atomic winter due to the oil well fires in Kuwait. That did not happen. So does the answer lie somewhere in between?

Overpopulation, deforestation and rising temperature along with pollution - what could possibly go wrong ? Rising oceans, weather changes and crop depletion, MACS will still have his fish to eat if the radiation doesn't kill them or him.

Tony, raised CO2 levels and increased tempurature would would increase crop production. Deforestation leads to more usable acreage for crops. California is becoming more arid, but Texas is becoming less arid. Neither climate change or deforestation are problems that are all bad. That being said they are both problems that need to be addressed. But cause and effect are not as straight forward negative as we are lead to believe.

I agree. Deforestation exacerbates the problem. So does - in a more fundamental way - over population.
But passing out plant seeds and condoms doesn't seem to help.

But back to cases - these are no reasons to pollute when there are alternative - ones that would create jobs to implement....

Think California and reduced crops due to climate change and flooded crops in Texas. Rising ocean levels mean less land. The polar ice melt could also end or change ocean currents and create more climate changes. The Sahara was not always a desert.

That they are....

The attorney general of the U.S. Virgin Islands is targeting dozens of conservative and libertarian organizations in a racketeering lawsuit against climate change skeptics that has been widely described as an effort to silence political opponents.

In a subpoena issued in March, the office of USVI attorney general Claude Walker demanded from Exxon Mobil copies of communications between the oil company and 90 different political and policy organizations “and any other organizations engaged in research or advocacy concerning Climate Change or policies.”

The subpoena was part of a national, coordinated legal campaign by state attorneys general and left-wing advocacy groups to use the legal system against companies and organizations that disagree with and advocate against Democratic policies to address global climate change.

The existence of the subpoena was first reported by the Wall Street Journal in April. A newly released copy obtained by the Washington Free Beacon reveals the names of the organizations targeted in the effort, which had previously been redacted.

Those organizations include some of the nation’s preeminent conservative and libertarian nonprofit groups. The AG is requesting Exxon Mobil communications with the Heritage Foundation, the Cato Institute, the Federalist Society, the Hoover Institution, the Reason Foundation, and the Mercatus Institute, among other groups.

One target of the subpoena, the libertarian Competitive Enterprise Institute, has already publicly responded to Walker. Its attorney called the attorney general’s subpoena “a blatant attempt to intimidate and harass an organization for advancing views that you oppose.”
