Just because you used the word doesn't mean you actually addressed it. You defined it within a narrow personal scope which had nothing to do with the survey, nothing to do with widely accepted ideas surrounding racism etc etc, and then said you don't know anyone who's racist.

I can define "educated" as people who know how to build their own spaceship only from twigs and berries found on the beach of playa del carmen, and then say I don't know anyone who's educated.... doesn't mean I've addressed education or provided any useful insight into it.

Fair enough. :)

And my title was a little misleading, as it implies all. But the survey cited is claiming a majority (by 20% or so)... so that means some percentage of confederate flag loving georgians aren't racist. (granted, this is by their definition as well)...

Mostly the part I found interesting is the severe drop-off in being able to answer questions about southern history which correlated with supporting confederate flag.

I once upon a time had a confederate flag plate hanging from my car bumper. It had the word "rebels" on the bottom signifying I was in that car club. I was young then and had been to the south and found it's racism to be disgusting.

Yeah. Blah, blah, blah... I actually have black friends (admittedly law enforcement) who completely agree with my stance that black people would be better served by OBEYING THE LAW than complaining when one of their race got shot when BREAKING IT.

Black folk, and white folk who feel guilty about slavery, are the folks upset about the confederate flag.

You've never suggested that I do not have black friends (Al, Daurice, Homer, Shon, and Troy... I'm sure... are shocked that they don't have to defend me against an ignorant douche)

The black population do not all think alike. Many of them, at least my friends, think as I do... that we all have the same opportunities. One of them is a cop... one a counselor, one a truck driver, one a military man. They all have something in common. They are successful. They didn't need anyone's help to be successful. They didn't need pity. They didn't need some snot-nosed, ass pipe advocating for them.

They did what they did, all on their own, as black men, with nobody's help.

I don't think it belongs on state buildings or grounds any more than the union jack belongs on state buildings to appease anyone who has "colony pride" or wants to pretend they care about the great history of our colony.
Beaten nations or attempts at nations simply don't belong. The Confederate flag represents a particularly nasty reason for their war, that of slavery. And if you look at the resurgence in popularity of that flag it tracked civil rights disagreements.

I enjoy mocking people who want to be so blind as to think that the coincidental resurgence of this flag has nothing to do with swaths of the population knowing the meaning it is supposed to send to the black population, and is just because everyone suddenly cared about history...

Admittedly, Derek... having been born in Rhode Island, and lived in Georgia when I was 12... it is something I do not understand.

Did God endow southerners with more grace? More wisdom? More... what?

I was made fun of in the south, simply because my accent was different. I was accepted, simply because I played football with ferocity... even though I was "northern and smaller". I tackled a couple of their good ol boys and put a hurtin' on 'em.

After that, I was ok.

But having gone to school in Marietta... I can say the black kids were treated just like everyone else... and that was 1982.

I can say with all certainty, if I had to choose which side of this argument, I'd much rather choose to lose my life getting a beatdown by you and your big black workout buddy saying that the Confederate flag is a symbol primarily used support thinly veiled racist causes and cloak them in the publicly palatable veneer of "southern pride". I don't want to die on any hill, to be honest. I just get tired of hearing the same old crap... and I get tired of seeing you argue with every-damn-body (except TW). Going back and re-reading the rants I posted, I sound like as much of a douche as I think you are when I read yours. So I got that going for me today (maybe tomorrow, too, eh?).

I know the saying you mean... pick your battles. Maybe the smarter choice would be to avoid politics and religion. You'd think I'd have learned that by this point... but sadly it appears not. d'oh!

Not for me. But, I enjoy Cbid for its stupidity and BS. And it keeps me regular.

I think most all know that the civil war was fought over money and control, just like all wars. The peeps are just arguing over the points that are relevant today. And I think the folks that display the CBF Do it because they think nineteenth century rebels are "cool". And they really don't care if it offends some people. It's all good MACS. I figured you were a few beers into the evening and not really caring how you came off.

I'm the first to admit I'll come off as a douche. That's simply because I don't care anymore. When I first came here (way back in 05) I tried my best to convince people through well crafted (in my mind at least) arguments with supporting evidence. I got no traction... no one is going to be convinced one way or another. After I got tired of trying to actually convince people through information and respect... well I realized I could have more fun and be less frustrated if I simply mocked the stupidity and hypocrisy.

I gave people a chance to be involved in respectful arguments. About the only person who manned up and kept it respectful was potts, but he couldn't understand the actual math behind his arguments, so it got nowhere anyway.

Yeah, I only had 3 beers, but those damn Dogfish Head Brown Ales are strong as hell!
