I've got some episodes I can tell about the time wen I was dating a woman that lived just about a mile from one of the "lookouts" at Little River Canyon, just east of Ft. Payne, AL. She was half Yaqui Indian and her half sister worked for the Country music group Alabama. They claim it as the deepest canyon East of the MS River, but you are correct, a fw try and claim to be then deepest. I can definitely admit that at one spot at least it had to be around 800-1000 ft!! YOU could look down and big truck sized boulders looked like little rocks!! I hiked to a pretty cool waterfall one day and watched a guy in a kayak being filmed as he went over the 30+ ft drop, multiple times.
Someone remind me at the Vherf tonight to tell a few of the tales I lived through during that 6-8 month stretch, LMAO!!
The Russell Fork Gorge at Breaks Interstate Park in Virginia/Kentucky. The trails are on the Virginia side of the park.
A low estimate from the canyon rim to the river is 1,300 feet, if you measure from Pine Mountain it's around 1,900 feet, but the trails arent on the Pine Mountain side. Wikipedia says 1,600 feet. Lol So idk. It's at least 1,300.
I had never heard of Little River Canyon until you mentioned it and then I ended up reading about it here: https://blogs.agu.org/thefield/2019/10/11/searching-for-the-deepest-gorge-in-the-appalachian-mountains/
I have visited all 3 of the "Appalachian Plateau" gorges mentioned in this article multiple times and as for the "Blue Ridge Western Piedmont" section Linville Gorge and Tallulah Gorge have been on my list for quite a while, but Linville is getting a little too popular for me. I dont like hiking with a lot of people around. One of my hiking buddies told me to NEVER visit Linville on a weekend.
The Little River Canyon looks like a place to add to my list. The only place I have ever hiked in Alabama is Cheaha Mountain. Its the state highpoint. 2,413 feet isn't really that high in elevation, it's the very southern end of the Blue Ridge, but the prominence of the mountain makes for some great views.
