A made a joke at closing about not worrying about my credit rating if I defaulted since I already had a new house and car at the time. She did not laugh. Neither did Mrs. Beach

Hey MACS. You know I live in Jacksonville. Navy base and VA isn’t bad here. I live in a maintenance free townhouse on Gate Parkway by the St Johns Town Center. Love my hood.

And you still have it to display China you don't use and because Kelly wants it, am I right?

Adora wants it. She moved across the country with me... she can have it. whip

Scheduled epoxy for garage floor. Scheduled painting for the interior. Notified shipping company that has my household goods of our new address and that we can receive our stuff 1st week of September.

Furniture we bought here should be delivered in September, too. Hopefully first couple weeks.

Adjusted my date to vacate the AirBnB from 15th of Sept to the 7th and saved some $$$. Garage and painting will be done by then. Hoping we either have the new furniture or the old stuff is delivered so we have a bed.

Hope you don't encounter any "Californians Go Home" sentiment...

I remember Kelly and I considered moving to the Seattle, Washington area in the 80's. This was before it bloomed into an economic giant with the rise of Amazon and Costco and Boeing. Homes were a lot cheaper than in CA. We visited and were shocked to see anti-Californian billboards, signs and bumperstickers. My cousins explained that the cost of real estate was being driven up by Californians, either moving in or buying investment property. Locals were being priced out of the market.

At the same time, some of the older Professors at Long Beach City College were saying the same thing about some cities in Oregon, including Bend. Several were buying homes there along with a wave of other older Californians in preparation for retirement and there was a lot of grumbling among the locals about how Californians were ruining their way of life. Ditto in Kingman Arizona, where one of our senior officers bought a house to which he planned to retire the following year. His neighbors didn't exactly welcome him.

Before you get too far gone with your Cali bashing...you DO realize that the high salary and bennies/pension you earned while working in CA was due to the organized efforts of working class "commies" throughout the history of this state. Your compensation as a corrections officer in CA ranks in the top five nationwide compared to Florida's rank of 43rd of 50. Pension payments under CalPERS 3% public safety retirement is among the highest in the nation. Though you didn't agree with those lefty libs, you reaped the rewards that they gained for the working class.

Rant off...hope your transition is a smooth one, and that we'll get to visit your sparkly new place soon.

I used to think CA had crappy roads. Not compared to Jax. Good grief.

Will be curious to see what my power bill will be like here. I'll be heating and cooling 1000 more sqft... no whole house fan... and I'll need to run the AC 24/7 for more months than I did in CA. d'oh!

Once I get settled I hope we can do a FL herf so I can actually get to meet Rfenst and DMV in person.

One piece of advice to cut down your power bill- ceiling fans everywhere.

Al... I don't think the locals were anti-CA. They were anti-CA politics. And they were absolutely correct then.

Look at WA and OR now? It's CA North... liberal run and circling the drain.

A lot of the folks I am meeting here are welcoming. Many are also not from here and moved here for the same reasons I did. I think, at least in the area I am currently in (old Springfield, downtown), they are a bit liberal. And there is currently a project going on to "revitalize" the area called SPAR (Springfield Preservation and Revitalization).

They are renovating older houses, apartments and such and trying to spruce things up. Lots of homeless in the area. Food Pantry line on Tuesday at 3pm and Thursday at 9am has plenty in line to get free food... oh, and bring photo ID. It's there on the sign.

But you've got run-down, dilapidated, craptastic "houses" next to beautifully renovated old houses. You've got houses flying American flags and US military flags (I've seen Navy and Marine... or a southern college like FSU or Auburn) and then the next house has a sign saying "We believe black lives matter, no human is illegal, love is love, blabbity blah, blah, BS...".

Liberal policies make rich people feel good and do absolutely nothing to help the people they claim to want to help. Just the facts...

Oh, and the Food Pantry sign? I'll text it to you if you want me to. Some here have already received that text with an LOL! Racist to require an ID to vote, but you poor folk that need food damn sure better have one or you gon' starve!

Can't make this crap up, man... need one to bank, to get public assistance, to buy booze or cigarettes... but to exercise an extremely important right, it should not be required? Pretty sure protecting the integrity of our voting system is more important than making sure a poor person doesn't get in line at the food pantry twice. Just saying.

JEA is one-stop shopping, Robert. Power, water, sewer... all in one bill. And the new pad has ceiling fans everywhere. Even on the patio. :-)

And while walking Tank past the food pantry this morning an older black lady says, "Good morning, handsome"... to which I replied, "You talking to me or the dog?" She winked and said... "Your dog is pretty, too."

I laffed.

Californians are hated anywhere outside of California. I moved from San Diego to Colorado in ‘98 and got a bit of it because Californians were ruining that state. Get the tags off the car ASAP and introduce yourself as a California escapee or refugee.

Interesting thing with California’s high salaries and benefits is that in exchange you get high taxes and cost of living. What matters is can you buy a house and how much money is left at the end of the month. You would be amazed at what it is like in a free state.

You guys both have a vested interest in CalPERS. It is 72% funded. That means it needs to strike gold, raise taxes, or cut benefits. MACS will have to become a socialist and support raising taxes in Cali!

Calpers needs to just cap benefits at 75% and make the douche-rockets collecting 100% in retirement manage to come up with the other 25%. Especially the big wigs collecting 100+% of a 300k salary with more in their investments.

75% of BASE pay, too... like the military does. After 30 years.

They'll be fine for years to come.

Having moved all over the country and being a native Californian, there is a lot of anti-California sentiment. Right now, you just about cannot buy anything without that BULLSHIT prop 65 warning crap on the box, the online ads, and in the instructions.

Now, as to how we and others I worked with were welcomed, IME, it had more to do with our attitude than anything. No matter where you go in this country there are people born and raised there, even if it's a shithole, don't tell them. Worse, saying something like, "Back in XYZ we had a law/did it better/it was cleaner... etc."

It probably did not hurt that I left on purpose and do not plan to ever return except to visit family.

the weird thing is that it wasn't leftist wild-eyed libs that drove the market up for public service salaries and bennies...

the organized and well-funded Police Unions, filled with far right wild-eyed cons, led the way ...20th century, and beyond, CA Labor Law is filled with successful litigation by Police Unions over City management trying to control costs...thus was born the Peace Officers Bill of Rights...a blueprint for law enforcement line officers nationwide, and eagerly followed by organized labor in other public sectors, including teachers unions...

You know as well as I do that it's not the cops making piles of cash in retirement. It's the city administrators, school administrators, and state, county and city officials. Usually appointed and not elected.

Text message from furniture store. All the stuff we ordered will be ready by end of August except the Dining room set.

S'awright... I suppose we can wait a bit longer for that. The king size bed and new mattress is what I'ze looking forward to.

Met with the painter rep yesterday. They're going to start right away on the 1st and should be done by the 3rd. He's going to join us on the final walk-through before closing so he can get the color matched.

Need to start perusing patio furniture and get that going.

Oh, I'll have another 22" WSM soon enough. Going to fit it with casters so I can roll it around when I need to. Cheaper at Home Depot or Lowe's though... plus a 10% veteran discount. :-)

Edit: holy sheit! The 18 used to be $300 and the 22 was $400!! Good grief!

At least I'll get $55 off.
