Sounds like you shouldn't be playing in the auction goose. If a bidder bids $X/per unit - you either out bid 'em or fold. You want to make unfair, the currently fair rules of the game.

I once went to a live auction, looking for some antique furniture. I went with a good friend of mine who was much more familiar with auctions than I was at the time. I bid on a few items, only to have them overbid by some people who seemed to be winning everything I wanted. I started whining to my friend about these antique dealers who were winning all the deals. I wanted to win a few deals too.

My friend put up with a good bit of my whining before turning to me and asking a simple question. "Are you looking for "DEALS" or are you looking for "STEALS". I asked what the difference was....He said, "A deal is getting it below retail. A steal is getting it below cost."

He then explained that those dealers knew what they could get for those antiques and still make money. So if I overbid them by a little bit, I'd STILL be getting a deal, just not a steal. I've used that theory ever since then.

Now you can take what I say with a grain of salt, after all, I WORK for CBid!! Trust me when I tell you that there are PLENTY of deals and steals out there....You just have to watch for them. We put up between 800 and 1000 lots each week. If you can't find something for a good price, I'm guessing you're not looking at all the possibilities.

I'll get off my soapbox now! :)

Thanks Trishhh ... I was wondering when the 'official word of sense' would come out ... ;-)

I've talked a little on this subject with either Keith, or Gonz, can't remember which one, a long while back. Basically I was told that there is a lot of merchandise that CB loses money on in these auctions ... and the only way they can make up for it, is in volume.
I've never had a problem with the way things happen here. I know when I've made a good deal, and many times I must admit ... I've gotten a steal.

Goose have you ever considered that if resellers didn't bid here these auctions might fold? Like it or not, resellers are often vital to success of other companies or organizations. I own a bookstore and part of my stock is used books. I go to library book sales were people donate books to the library so the library can raise money. Booksellers are hated at these sales because they buy so many books and are treated like crap by the people running the sale. But if booksellers or book scouts didn't come to these sales the library wouldn't raise half of what they would otherwise, we buy in large volume for purposes of resell. But a cost in that resale is the books sitting on the shelf until it sells. At auctions if dealers didn't show up to buy, these would go under also. The dealers here buy lots that CB are probably thrilled to get rid of along with those lots that CB probably loses money on, but if it wasn't for the dealers bidding here CB would not make as much if anything as they do now and could well disappear. Call them a necessary evil if you may. I wholesale new and used books to other dealers myself and though some books I know I could have easily received full retail, other books they take I am thrilled to get rid of, and I am always happily accept these sales.

The father of one of my ex-wives -- remember, I live in Texas -- ran the concession in an auto auction in San Antonio: hamburgers, sandwiches, coffee, beer -- a nice business for a retired Air Force officer. Although you had to have a dealer's license to participate, he got me into several auctions and I bought two cars there. I sat through the first couple of sales to see how they worked. Most of the cars were rolling wrecks (Lone Wolfs and Legions), but every so often they’d drive in a nice trade-in that one of the first line dealers needed to move (AF Hemingways and Partagas Anniversarys). I quickly realized I could pay anywhere from nothing to too much for a wreck. That wasn't the way with trade-ins because they were the bread-and-butter for second line dealers who owned used car lots. Those guys were sharp and bid accordingly. I asked my father-in-law how could I bid so that I got a nice car. He told me small lot dealers always knew they could sell the next day any car they bought that day. If I wanted a particular car I had to outbid everyone else who wanted it. And I’d better not whine if that cae burned oil or needed a new exhaust system or had a cracked head. I bought two nice cars there. And one good one.

You guys make some good points!

Also, after reading what Trish had to say about the whole issue, I am going to just assume that I over-reacted to what I was experiencing on the site personally.

If CBid is happy with the current way of things, thats O.K. by me. And as Abereen and Mike pointed out, the last thing I want to see happen is for CBid to go under!

In terms of the deals (more steals actually) I have gotten from this site to date, I have absolutely NO complaints! In fact, when one of the items I received recently failed to live up to my expectations, Cbid graciously agreed to take the item back, paying for the shipping to boot!

This may be an auction site, but they run it like a first class retailer! In fact, a large majority of retailers could learn a thing or two about how these guys run their business!

I am done beating this horse if you guys are? :o)
