After my second heart attack,
I asked my doctor, if I should quit smoking. He said, if I were smoking cigarettes, I should quit immediately. I asked about cigars. He said, if they helped me to relax, and I didn't inhale, that there was nothing wrong with 1-2 cigars a day.

Old info, new info - who cares? Have any good info about the dangers of smoking cigars? Very few decent studies have been done so far as I've been able to find.

I think everyone here understands that there are certain health risks associated with smoking. There are certain health risks associated crossing streets, riding bikes, jogging, sitting outside in the sun, drinking beer, shaking hands, playing with your kids, watching tv, bowling, playing basketball, and fly fishing. It is undeniable that we'll all die someday. It is pretty likely that if we're here, we enjoy smoking cigars, and believe them to contribute to a higher quality of life for us.

#158 Can I get that in writing from your doc? That's been my rationale...some days it's tough to relax, I have a high stress job. I've been saying the bad effects of smoking will take longer to kill me than the heart attack I've been working up to.

Does it really matter if it's old info or new info about smoking dangers. What was the info that made Mattie consider giving away all his cigars? I can't understand why you won't share this. Did Mattie approach you wanting to stop or did you tell him he was killing himself?

re: 162 -- Agreed, it doesn't matter if the info was old or new. We're all adults and responsible for our own decisions, and Tobacco Nazi shouldn't have to justify her decision for Mattie to give up cigars.

What I do not understand is why it is just fine and dandy that she can decide if he smokes or not... but when i ask if she makes him sit to pee... i get an indignant response.

It is a simple yes or no answer.

I'm thinking the secret info is probably ciggarette related and may have been stretched a bit to include cigars. Otherwise there wouldn't be a problem here. Maybe we should just drop it? But then again, Mattie brought it up..

Here's some scary stuff- (because I care..)

In 1994, a Swedish study found that women 18-30 years old who visited tanning parlors 10 times or more a year had seven times greater incidence of melanoma than women who did not use tanning salons. In another study, people exposed to 10 full-body tanning salon sessions had a significant increase in skin repair proteins typically associated with sun damage, indicating that ultraviolet (UV) radiation from indoor tanning is as dangerous as UV from the sun. And in 2002, a study from Dartmouth Medical School found that tanning device users had 2.5 times the risk of squamous cell carcinoma and 1.5 times the risk of basal cell carcinoma .

One of the best lung hospitals in the woorld is National Jewish Medical Research Center in Denver CO

COPD is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease a very prevalent lung ailment

http://www.njc.org

This is from their site:

Tobacco Smoke: Cigarette smoking is by far the most important risk factor for COPD and the most important way that tobacco contributes to the risk of COPD. Cigarette smokers have a higher prevalence of lung-function abnormalities and respiratory symptoms, a greater annual rate of decline in FEV 1, and higher death rates for COPD than nonsmokers. Pipe and cigar smokers have higher COPD morbidity and mortality rates than nonsmokers, although their rates are lower than those for cigarette smokers52. Not all smokers develop clinically significant COPD, which suggests that genetic factors must modify each individual's risk. Passive exposure to cigarette smoke may also contribute to respiratory symptoms and COPD by increasing the lungs' total burden of inhaled particulates and gases36,53,54. Smoking during pregnancy may also pose a risk for the fetus, by affecting lung growth and development in utero and possibly the priming of the immune system50

Tobacco/Swimsuit Nazi,
Chief has paid as much attention to this thread as an addled Indian can, still he sees no link to your organizations website.
Does Chief need to say 'pretty please'? 'Pretty please with acorns on top'?

Big Chief want website.

No more dodge. The place you are associated with is.....

And the direct link to the website is.......

You DO realize Tobacco Nazi, that by witholding vital information about the ills of cigar smoking, you are putting all these people in great peril.

It's almost as if you want all of the smokers here, who are seeking out information to continue to puff away until they are dead.

If you are a proponent of anti smoking groups, or the use tobacco products, find you voice and help save these people!

What should they, we, know?!

I'm not sure why she is not telling you of her place of employment. I don't understand why she would mind. All I can guess is that, in her mind she is scared. She may be concerned that someone may report, to her agency, that she is involved with this forum.
Or, she may not clearly understand that y'all are interested in knowing.

She gave y'all some sites to visit. Out of respect for CBID, I asked her not to go to far with this. I don't want to cause any type of conflict of interest. I'm sure she will offer an email address if someone wants more in depth details.

I'll talk to her about sharing more about where she works.

I dont mind telling any of you where I work! My agency is a substance abuse prevention agency and our mission is to prevent youth substance abuse and promote healthy life styles through developing and providing effective products and services for schools, communities and businesses. Having said that..we opperate off of grants...and I am the director of 2 grants..one i coordinate our state's efforts to reduce and prevent underage drinking...the other is that i have funding from the state to have a coalition to reduce tobacco use (not just smoking) in 3 counties of our state. If u want to know more..feel free to ask. If you truely want information we can talk about that...but like Mattie said....i will respect this forum.
