Seems to me that people who pop out a bunch of brood and demand I care about their well being are more selfish than an individual who isn't trying to foist responsibility for some bad decision on everyone else.

Ethics are fine and dandy, but everyone has their own. I'm not actively killing children to use their flesh to make soap. That's reasonably ethical of me. I am under no obligation to concern myself with the health of the planet simply because you and other people decided to breed. Hell, most of the people who HAVE the damn children don't show any particular concern over the long-term viability of the planet (see this thread as an example), so why would you expect me to? I'm just willing to be honest about it. I gain zero personal benefit from the long term viability of the planet, therefore any costs are 100% lost. Theoretically, an individual who likes their children should gain some benefit from this, so they should have a greater incentive than I do. It sure as hell would be dumb of me to care more than some lazy **** who's just going to reap the benefits.

To conflate this with school taxes (which I happily pay, educating children is important and keeps them occupied and away from me) is additionally ridiculous.

Well, perhaps ethics are not your thing. And I do understand your point of view, albeit adolescent.

Think of it like this; for generations without measure your blood line has rasied their young, provided for them, and stewarded the land. Then Victor is born and declares "I'm going to pi$$ in the well all I want."
You are a true cool dude.

If you're true to your values, you are missing out on the soap opportunity. I mean everyone is a benefit or a liability, right?

Tell me, did your parents own a well?

Piss poor argument (allusion intentional). By your argument, everyone born has a responsibility to birth more people, simply by the fact that they were shot out a vag. I would argue that given that the largest factor in any of the planet's environmental issues is simply the number of people alive, it's a greater ethical decision to not selfishly add to the current bioload, simply because of some infantile assumption that your personal genetic line is in any way special or helpful to the human race.

If you're trying to convince morons to breed, talk to someone else.
If you're trying to convince me to care about some moron's children, go somewhere else.
If you want to have an actual discussion, then try re-assessing the stand you're making

Victor, I take issue with your statement and attitude toward mankind. Children were meant to be a shining example. I see that it was lost on you.

You may not feel an obligation to the race that brought you into being.
You may feel no sense of ‘pay it forward’ to the planet that provides you your next breath.
You may in fact have no love for the circle of life that you are a part of.
But you cannot clam that these are honorable values – they are not.
And your pride in your disregard of the future for the rest of us speaks poorly of your character.

Honestly, you are putting yourself in a rather bad light.

Good luck with your hakuna matata.

Sigh...
Brew... you aren't a bad person, but you're.... myopic.
First, the "Standard Disclaimer" is an absolute necessity on this forum, otherwise some less than bright individuals would run around calling me a liberal simply because I think the steps they take in their decision making process are.... poor. The disclaimer is necessary to differentiate that my disagreement is not with the negative impact on the environment, but rather the piss poor decision-making.

Now... on to your little list.
1 - your claim I have an obligation to "pay it forward" simply because I have been born? Do I have a greater or lesser obligation to pay it forward than an individual who is popping out spawn and will ultimately use it? Because the people with children don't seem to give a rats ass, I'm just being honest about my lack of interest.
2 - the circle of life doesn't exist. it's a bull**** concept disney shoved up everyone's ass. It's more a constantly collapsing and re-forming amoeba of life.
3 - I never claimed these were honorable values.
4 - You want ME to care about YOUR future, and a lack of MY caring about YOUR future shows poor character? You pre-suppose that you deserve a future... I am under no obligation to believe that every idiot on this planet deserves a future, and I'd question your judgement if you think they do.

Actually, I am myopic; but in a literal sense, with corrective lenses and all. And with these corrected eyes, your values appear far more short sighted. However what I should write is, that we have very different views of the world – parallax to be polite – not that I really think it is our vantage points that differ.

Be that as it may, you have obligations whether you acknowledge them or not. Rationalize all you like, but we are all part of a long line of codependence. And if you see yourself as owing nothing, you are not accurate or unique – only ungrateful.

I guess this all started with me taking exception to your pride in admittedly dishonorable values. And having discussed it, you have more than pride, you have zeal. I really should have seen this coming.
Perhaps I am more short sighted than I had thought.

Ah good.... I was afraid you'd just remain insufferably holier-than-thou.

You are certain I have obligations based on my existence on this planet. List them off. Be precise. You can't just make a blanket statement about some vague obligations and run off. How am I supposed to know whether you are fulfilling your obligations? Are these obligations transferable? If my mother was a really good person and recycled a lot, am I absolved from having to do it?

Don't just stand there and be smug about how much you care about our planet, Tell me, and be precise. Exactly how much responsibility you believe each individual has. Have you met your responsibility? Or are you just sitting here being smug because you "care"? (I'd like to point out, that "caring" accomplishes nothing). Additionally, can this "responsibility" be monetarily accomplished? What percentage of your income do you dedicate to this responsibility? Are there specific acceptable charities?

I swear, you're starting to remind me of the san franciscans in South Park, smugly sniffing their own farts.
