An outstanding episode!

(I believe the official term for "caring" is actually "raising awareness".)

Ah good.... I was afraid you'd just remain insufferably holier-than-thou.

You are certain I have obligations based on my existence on this planet. List them off. Be precise. You can't just make a blanket statement about some vague obligations and run off. How am I supposed to know whether you are fulfilling your obligations? Are these obligations transferable? If my mother was a really good person and recycled a lot, am I absolved from having to do it?

Don't just stand there and be smug about how much you care about our planet, Tell me, and be precise. Exactly how much responsibility you believe each individual has. Have you met your responsibility? Or are you just sitting here being smug because you "care"? (I'd like to point out, that "caring" accomplishes nothing). Additionally, can this "responsibility" be monetarily accomplished? What percentage of your income do you dedicate to this responsibility? Are there specific acceptable charities?

I swear, you're starting to remind me of the san franciscans in South Park, smugly sniffing their own farts.

Yes, I am certain that you (we) have obligations to others and our environment.

Give you a precise list and don’t make blanket statements about a persons obligations in life? Really?

Victor, the matter of our obligations as people is even less simple then you think. And there is no level of detail, no exhaustive list, or thoroughly tested bit of reason that would suffice; you are an admitted misanthrope with dishonorable values and pants that are way too short (ok, I guessed about the pants). You have already dismissed core values common to all people (it’s people I talking about here), so having me providing you further example or comparing notes would have no meaning.

I might as well try to convince Richard Dawkins to love Jesus, or Hitler to wear a yamaka, or ****** Clark to host the 2014 New Years Eve Bash. Face it Victor, you are not looking for reason – you are looking for a benevolent thought that you can devour like Mama Cass on a ham samich.

BTW; caring is the precursor to humanities greatest actions. Without its’ spark the home fires would not burn.

Ok. Since you're not willing to quantify anything at all, which I take to mean you really haven't thought through the entire argument, let me do a little work for you.

I'm not having children.
This means I'm not having the average 2 kids (in the US, mileage may vary in other countries), and they are not having the average 2 kids each, etc etc.
This means that within the span of 50 years, I have already voluntarily removed the generation of waste and consumption of resources of 6 WESTERN people (important to emphasize, as we consume more here than pretty much anywhere).
That's 6 people's worth of gas consumption (lifetime) saved.
That's the clean water consumption of 6 people. Saved.
That's the energy consumption, air conditioning, beef consumption. Saved.

I've already done more for the rest of the people on this planet than 99% of the population, simply by not breeding.
But that's not enough for you? I'm supposed to also say I care? I have a news flash for you... I WON'T BE THERE. Do you care if the fat guy in a room is gonna fart after you've left? no. In fact,if you're particularly devious you may feed him burritos before you leave. (hey drafter, want a burrito?)

I don't know what your obsession with "caring" is. It doesn't actually accomplish anything.

Honestly Victor, Ray Charles could see this one with a cane. You’re not having children is because you don’t want to raise the little basterds – not for any altruistic reasons, real or imaginary.

By your crippled excuse for logic a leader who commits genocide is the ultimate steward of the land and abortion providers are near deities.

Your confusion about caring is simple. Unfortunately, you would have to have participated at least once to understand the mechanism. Until then only a mystery will you have . . .

For whatever it's worth, and I don't think it's the cold medicine talking, but I've rather enjoyed the intellectual give and take going on here- most notably between Brew & Victor. I think that the lines separating us are overlapping and/or getting blurred.

Nicely done. Applause

Wow... superficial arguments at best. You do honestly care more about "caring" than actual results, huh? Kinda implies you don't want to actually solve a problem.

Brewha wrote:

So? since when does desire to help matter? If I really enjoy recycling, does that mean that I don't have a positive impact when I do it? Were you raised catholic or something?
If your goal is to help the planet (which I kind of doubt, I suspect you just like saying you care about it), then you shouldn't care whether I do or don't want children. The savings impact should be what is important.

Quote:

Um...strictly within the context of the health of the environment, and barring any use of environmentally damaging weaponry, yes. (Well, not abortion providers, since the kid would likely be aborted regardless of each individual's presence). what's your point? a serial killer may be really good with puppies too, doesn't mean he isn't good with puppies.

Yep... keep sniffing your own fart. this is the dumbest of all arguments, and one I've seen you use before. It makes you sound like a hipster... What's the quote "if you can't explain something simply, you don't really understand it" or something like that.

Jesus... arguing with you almost makes me wish potts were around.

Victor - Well I am impressed.

I give you the nod; your ability to debate is unexcelled. And I mean that sincerely. From you total ignorance of being lambasted to your innate ability to create more tangents than an exploding bowel; you have the tenacity of a twelve pack drunk – with jock itch.

Thank you for the triple quote recant. I feel strangely honored.
So:

I hereby yield the thread jack topic of “Victors Standard Disclaimer” to the poster from an undisclosed location.

I leave the topic with this thought;
acting to the benefit of those unborn is to provide mercy, and . . . .

The quality of mercy is not strain'd,
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
'T is mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes
The throned monarch better than his crown;
His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty,
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptred sway,
It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,
It is an attribute to God himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God's,
When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,
Though justice be thy plea, consider this,
That in the course of justice none of us
Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;
And that same prayer doth teach us all to render
The deeds of mercy.

Feel free to argue with Portia if you like.

Who cares? We've been thrashing the environment for years like a midshipman on shore leave in Phuket Thailand. I think we at least need to quit being bad stewards of the earth. If it is just a natural cycle then what is the harm? After all, the earth will be here long after we are all dust (and the earth doesn't care). fog

Whoa whoa whoa, big feller.

You're looking for a credit? Because you won't have offspring to usurp resources?
Big whoop.

You also won't have kids, grand kids nor great (to the nth) grand kids to help PAY for the mess we're digging ourselves into today.

If anything, you OWE us.

Because eventually the world will invent reliable and affordable renewable energy. But we'll never pay our way out of this debt.
