Totally with ya there...and I grew up on vinyl.
At its peak, my record collection was easily at 3,000, probably closer to 3,500+. Hell, it coulda been 4,000 but I stopped counting / caring after my boxes and boxes of records took almost every square feet of free space in my room. And, because of wear and tear every time you play an album, I either listened to music mostly at work (...part-time sales clerk in the music / record department or store for 9 years after high school...) or taped the “good” songs and played the tape rather than the record. The little things about vinyl - clicks & pops, rumble, signal-to-noise ratio, acoustic feedback, pitch and tracking, just drove me mad. And not even talking abut the care, cleaning and proper storage needed to maintain them. Bought better and better turntables and cartridges to mitigate some of the issues but some could never be overcome.
Fast forward to 1984. Sales rep at Sony Hawaii. For our Dealer Pre-Show that year, we received a prototype of the first commercial CD player (CDP-101) and set it up in our Demo room. Put on Beethoven’s 5th, pressed “Play” and out of the total silence came the opening blare, “Ta-ta-ta DUH!” I was instantly sold! No pops, no clicks, no careful handing and cleaning of the media before playing. From that day forward, I knew I would be getting CDs and replacing my vinyl.
Haven’t looked back since. Sure, I’ve bought multiple versions of CDs of my favorite albums - original release, remastered, remastered and expanded, etc. but no real regrets about that. I have, from time to time, thought about buying a turntable for my remaining albums (...best guesstimate is 500-750...) but after awhile I snap back to reality and forego that idea. I find so many more advantages to the digital format than analog but for those that prefer vinyl, I salute you!
