We have a RX pandemic in this country of people using addictive pain meds for recreation. Would you prefer they do nothing?

I think 14 days of pain meds is plenty. It isn't like you can't go back and get more... and this way your doctor can monitor more closely. Just my $.02.

Don't you think a 51-year old neurosurgeon is far more knowledgeable than you about pain levels and management of his surgeries rather than a mindless legislature or governor?

How do you know 14 days is even sufficient for the specific procedure? Do you even know what it will be? I needed a full 90 days of pain meds last time to make it through recovery and horrendous physical therapy (which is the norm). After that, I had to see a pain management doc for another three months of a lower strength narcotic. These time lengths are within the normal ranges.

We have a state registry that every narcotic is logged into at the time of every RX and then again at pharmacy pick-up. Doctors must look at it to see what has been prescribed/filled by anyone else before prescribing narcotics for any reason. Bottom line is that this easily prevents opioid over-use/abuse.

Bro, I love you, but your off on this one- if you only consider the crisis and not the true needs of the individual patient on a case by case basis...

When I had my shoulder surgery my doctor gave me 60 pills of the 10 mg Norco. I needed to take one for the first 3 days for pain.

Then when I started physical therapy, after the first day of "holy sh*t this hurts"... I took one an hour before I had to go to physical therapy until I worked through it.

Of the 60 pills he prescribed, I think I used 20 and threw away 40... so if you think your doctor knows how much you need, he doesn't. Only you really know.

When people get addicted, they ask for more... what your doctor does know is when you're faking. So the legislation doesn't prevent you from getting more meds, nor does it prevent your doctor from prescribing you more meds. It DOES give your doctor a bit more oversight, should he be ethical enough to use it.

I think many would just give you a refill over the phone.

That would be a felony here, despite true need. Period.

The only two ways around it are for the doctor to prescribe 3-4x what you really need and to use less than what the bottle says by agreement with your surgeon to stretch out the length of time of use. They can also prescribe like 4mg of dilauded that you split into 2mg doses to make the meds last longer. The other alternative is to be under the care of a pain management specialist for a long time( 1-2 years) BEFORE surgery.

To make matters worse, my board certified anesthesiologist/pain management doc is limited to a small number of patients who he can prescribe narcotics for by state law, despite being 100% legitimate. He may even have to kick someone else in need off his list to get me what I **might** need. Most thankfully, we are friends, which might help.

Almost all shoulder surgeries (except for total replacements which are rarely performed) vs. posterior cervical fusion with rods, brackets and screws are entirely different things pain-wise. My mom ( 83 yrs. old) just had shoulder surgery and did not need any pain meds after the second day.

The two are incomparable. Believe me, I have been there.

It's not ridiculous. It's about right-ish.

I got the AC and furnace done for $7500. Kept existing lines and ducting... military discount... cash discount. They basically replaced the condenser outside, and the cooler and furnace in the attic. I don't think a CA furnace is the same as an Indiana or Wisconsin furnace. Probably single stage vs multi stage, so there's that...

I think they still burn coal in their furnaces in those states.

There's an idea. There's enough floating around at work, they wouldn't miss a few pickup truck loads

Doesn't solve the AC half of my problem though

Robert, I wasn't comparing pain, brother... I was pointing out that I was waaaaay over-prescribed a potent narcotic.

My buddy joked I could have sold the 40 pills for 10-15 bucks apiece... he worked narcotics.

Add another massive project to my backlog of massive projects.

Was digging up/tearing out the old raised garden I had around the deck. All the timbers were rotten and it needed to be redone. I was walking to throw a bundle of wet timbers in the burn pile and foot went through the ground, and into the septic tank. The whole top of the septic tank collapsed. Just 6" of grass and dirt over it.

Got the garden all ripped out though. 3 yards of wet dirt shoveled by hand. Used it to level some low spots from when I replaced the septic field.

Covered the chit tank with some plywood until I can get some quotes for a new tank.

Back in college, a handful of friends and I decided that for spring break we'd go mountain biking and camping somewhere different. The plan was hatched the night before we left (under the influence of mind altering substances, of course). In the morning we loaded up a VW bus and a hatchback car with camping gear and bikes strapped to the bike racks and roofs of the vehicles.

We didn't really have a destination other then we wanted to go somewhere new but we had one of those road atlas books of the US states. Packed up and drove... and drove... and drove. Made it to somewhere in West Virginia. Tired of driving, we set up a temporary camp off of a dirt road. This wasn't what we were looking for so the next morning we pack up and head out again.

Ended up in the Daniel Boon National Forest in Kentucky. We set up camp on the edge of a small river/stream where we stayed for about 5 days. We had a blast biking through the trails and making it up as we went along. Didn't see many human life forms other than some local and really colorful characters that actually lived there in the back woods. Best I can describe it is a scene from Deliverance.

Anyway.... the river/stream where we set up camp had raw chunks of coal that speckled the stream bed. It's like free charcoal for cooking. NOPE... Big mistake to add them to the campfire. It burned nice and hot but it really stunk up the place and you didn't want to use it for cooking.

Well, heard back about tank replacement cost. He said it can be recovered with a new concrete cap for about $1200 if I dig it myself. New poly tank is about $2-2500 and another $1500 for excavation and installation of a new one. Old one would just be left in place and backfilled with dirt. He said or you can cap it with PT wood or weld up a metal cap too. I checked SS pricing from my steel place, a full sheet of 3/16" plate SS is $3800!!!! Plus the per cut fee it would require 6 shear cuts and one torch cut putting me well over $4k for a cap.

I think I'm going to recap it with ground contact pressure treated wood timbers. GC PT 4x6 timbers are $30/ea, would need just 8 of those plus threaded rod, angle iron and stuff. Still under $500.

I'll never go back to renting, but can see why people do.

I couldn't ever live that close to other people ever again. I think life would be a little easier if I could.

Depends on which systems are being quoted. First company in here had three furnace options and the same # of AC.
Second one came in with 4 and 3. Not diving into the numbers yet, however, at first glance, your #s are more ridiculous than mine.

SOB AC costs:

3 ton downstairs unit: $8,000

The price sucks and they do not last as long as they used to, ten years if you're lucky. horse Brick wall

Wonder if the Southeastern combo of heat and humidity is tougher on a furnace/ac until that the Sconniw winters. Maybe ours are heartier, as the suggested lifespan of the units in one presentation was 15-20 years.

Three options from this guy. Like I said, that was the cheapest version. I'll dig into it more once I get other estimates. I've been too busy mourning the imminent demise of my bank account to think much on it.

All this talk about home improvements and stuff, ouch!

Makes me think that renting ain't so bad. With that said, the place I'm in isn't a typical apartment complex. It's a converted old furniture factory and the units are pretty large (that's what she said). It's a pretty quiet complex with some nice amenities. Population ranges from young families to old retirees. Most people keep to themselves yet pretty friendly. There are little social clicks as you'd expect in any small community.

If I were to buy another house again, I'd just be paying rent to the bank for the rest of my life rather than the landlord. Then I'd still have to deal with the upkeep of their investment out of pocket along the way. Even if I cut a 15 yr mortgage I'd be in my late 60's before it's paid off. I'm too old for that $hit.

To each his own I guess. I have lived in many apartments and will never do it again unless it's the dementia house. I have two mortgages and already older that the 60s you fear. As long as homes increase in value faster than the upkeep and other investments beat paying off the mortgages that is the way I will always go.

Don't want anybody living that close and making rules on where I can smoke, etc.

Call you Mom or take her out to lunch or dinner. She had to deal with you/me a holes for many years, it's the least you can do.

If your Mom has passed, do something in her honor... like behave yourself, wash behind your ears, brush your teeth, hold a door open for someone or plant a flower in her name.

See... here's the thing... they plan ahead. Plots picked, wills done, money socked away for it so the kids don't have to pay for the stuff.

About 10 yrs ago they had us (me and my siblings) go through the paperwork as "next of kin" thing and the will. That was uncomfortable even contemplating the idea that nobody lives forever... but it is what it is.

Bucky, you are a younger guy. I think all younger people get freaked out about mortality. I know I did. No one is every ready to transition. For myself as I aged I became unafraid of that transition. I do not have any idea of how many older people are unafraid of it. I think anyone from an Atheist to a Christian can become unafraid of it. Not wanting to cause any debate or heat here I will stop at that.

Younger? My body might disagree with that.

At the risk of going down the rat hole of religion, a topic that I try to avoid since everyone has their own definition of it.

I'm not super into religion but a fan of spirituality which comes in many forms. As the saying goes "religion is for those who don't want to go to hell, and spirituality is for those who have already been there."

If someone asks me "What religion are you..." I don't have a clean answer that.

Still gots the bird feeder (along with some other old folks) and the manager of the place hasn't said anything about it.

This month's newsletter made no mention of previously mentioned banning of bird feeders. I think I might hang up one of those suet cake thingies too. I'm like a rebel and stuff.

They are still looking for lifeguards to oversee the outdoor pool this summer. Typically the pool is open 6 days a week from like 10 AM to 7 PM during the summer but they had to close early last summer because they didn't have a lifeguard. I don't know why they need a lifeguard on duty. It's like 3 ft deep at one end, 8 ft deep at the other end. No diving board or slide or anything. Prolly for insurance/liability reasons. Just have people sign a waiver for "swim at your own risk" type of thing like they do for the onsite gym.

I have a pellet gun for that if need be.

On a side note: I think I might of bruised a rib (get it? side note... rib....).

Took a bike ride earlier today and leaned a bit too hard on a turn. Tires slid out from under me on the sand.... Zip... ***crash*** (they haven't done the street sweeper thingy to clean up the sand from the winter yet. Them bass turds).

It didn't hurt right away but it's kinda painful to take a deep breath. I'd stop breathing but the side effects of doing so would be rather detrimental to my overall health.
