Actually you can make it on any bread (preferably Italian).

Muffaletta is the main ingrediant of the sandwich that consists of black & green olives, artichoke hearts, olive oil, various spices. You spread the mixture on the bread and pile on the Italian cold cuts and go to town.

Don't forget the red wine!!!!!!!!!

Being a Sicilian from NJ with NY roots, none of my family actually heard of it until a family member who travels a lot, told us about it several years ago.

Question:

What is more similar to a genuine Muffaletta?

1. A submarine roll filled with italian cold cuts and that yummy olive salad.

2. A round italian bread with peanut butter.

Although you are correct that an authentic Muffa is made on the round bread, the important aspect is the ingredients.

I make a nice muffaletta olive salad once in a while and I always try to get the round bread. But it never tastes bad no matter what shape the bread is.

And when it comes to eating, I AM an expert.
