how can i tell if there's a topic/post that is new aka i havn't viewed it yet. it used to turn purple once i've viewed it and it's just helpfull to visually be able to see it quickly and to be able to scan for new threads that i might be interested in.

If it's a new thread or it has changed since your last viewing, it has a red splotch. If nothing has changed since the last time, then it's an open folder icon.

Bear in mind though that there is a refresh timer involved, so if you leave a window open to the forums for a period of time, even if you aren't using it, it might set threads that have changed to a "no new posts" indicator.

I don't think so, I was going to ask the same thing, because since I created a new username it makes me look like a newbie. Oh well.

The success of a website is all based on the number of "clicks" needed to get what a customer wants. While this new site has some great bonuses, the number of clicks needed to find something is a little too many. ONe of the great successes of the old CBid site was it's utter simplicity. Sometimes simple is better.

It's going to take a bit to get use to this new site......

1. If I replied in a thread, there should be a "checkmark" or something on the folder/icon so you know whether or not you replied in it.

2. Each thread should be in bold or not in bold if there are/aren't any new replies since the last time you viewed at the page (or since the last time you logged in)....not really sure if that makes sense, but I'm sure someone can understand it that has spent any time on a "real" forum. Or is that what the "New" icon is for at the front of each thread?

(first time using the edit feature...yeehaw)
Looks like #2 has been addressed.

Oh, man...this is going to take me a while to get used to. I think I belong to another board, but this is the only one I ever post on. I mean...jeepers, I'm male and just turned 47 last Friday. It's not that I can't change...it's that I'm genetically programmed to resist change.

BTW, maybe a little too much info. available now, too. I just learned moments ago that I first started posting on the CBBB back in Feb of 2006, and I've posted over 41K times. That can't be right, can it?

tried changing my avitar (selected image on my computer and click the upload button)

let it sit for about 10 minutes and nothing happened. Status line said something like "waiting for cigarbid.com"

Funny you say that Kimmer, I tried changing your avatar too. I got the same error.

Probably better for you that way, I was going to make you the 4th Spaniard.

Auction pages are pretty bad in IE6 (@ work - can't upgrade from where I sit.)

Huge white space on right 3/4 of screen; add to watch and lot nav button labels don't wrap and buttons floating in space; winners box is too small and way down page.

I'm disappointed in much; slow to load at times; hard to view on smart phone; forum posts per page; challenging auction navigation; time outs on sign in, etc.

However....I'm hopeful that things here are perceived to be really bad for those individuals that have a tendency to bid on the same cigars I do! I'll put up with all the above to save two bucks....at least, for now.

Question: Is there a way to temporary block all the whiney children and senile old coots who need their diapers changed and have been sent into a spiraling depression because the site has been updated? A two-week block ought to do it.

Maybe CBid should start 2 new threads...

What do you like? Edit feature, quote feature

What do you NOT like? pretty much the rest of it

Then work from the responses and try to meet us all in the middle. Or they could just say "This is the new CBid, don't like it? Tough ****".

Sure, after navigating around for awhile, you get used to it, but just because you're used to it doesn't mean it sucks any less.

Quote, edit is all people really ever asked for. I like the simplicity of the "old" site.

This is a bunch of fluff. Emoticons? Are we freaking 15?

The # of post feature is cool, and the joined date. Ranking system, who cares. Already had a bunch of people that feel entitled because they have posted more.

I don't like it. Probably wont be using the forum. CBid probably doesn't care since I don't buy much here lately.

I hate to sound like Ron, but this is just too much work.

New forum sucks.

Two more:
-No order history visible
-Active bids list should include end date - shouldn't have to click over to actual auction

Thanks

Bad enough that the interface is busy and cluttered just to be busy and cluttered, everything takes four times more clicks now to perform, the overall sluggish performance times on top of that are making this site painful to use. Screw the forum, if you don't fix that, you're going to lose customers.

Also interesting is how this is being touted as some wonderful advancement, yet, in the last 24 or 48 hours since the changeover, features are being steadily removed instead of added.

For regular view - If we're going to be stuck with this cluttered, eclectic and busy just to be busy interface, might as well at least get a decent featureset rather than the amateurish and electric set now offered.

  1. An option in the user CP (preferences) to set the number of posts viewable per page. Say 5 choices: 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and ALL posts per page to pick from. Although more than 50 is probably too cumbersome for the new graphical format that has been adopted.

  2. Embedded hyperlinks? Opens up a can of worms for competitor links, spam and malicious links, but can be convenient when used properly and as intended. Please make it clear if they are going to be added or they are out of the question.

  3. Polls. Might as well add polls, otherwise some people will never be able to figure out what to smoke or buy. Limiting to maximum of 10 choices is usually sufficient. Rarely will there ever be a need for more choices.

  4. Time limits on edits - no need to have things changeable forever. 15 minutes is usually sufficient. A proper edit function should also track and make
available what was edited in addition to showing the time and date of the edit.

  5. Ranks are pointless and worthless in most cases other than for identifying Administrator, Moderator and Vendor/Sponsor, or in this forum, Manufacturer. If you're going to have them, you might as well make them editable by the user, let them have some fun with them.

  6. Search by thread title

  7. IMG code? Looks like Gonz or one of his people turned off the tag now? yes/no?

  8. If you're going to have quoting, might as well have a multi-quote function.

  9. A properly implemented list function. This should be showing as a numbered list, yet all it's doing is a tab spacing the items. Unordered lists come out the same as they lack bullets.

The classic view needs a lot of help.

  1. Delineation between posts is insufficient (bars are too thin) and the server dictated font and size make it difficult to increase legibility.

  2. Also, if someone is viewing in classic mode, then it stands to reason that they probably just want a quick reply box to enter text into and not the advanced composition window with all the feature controls and emoticons. Have the "reply" link at the far right of each author bar open in quick reply rather than advanced composition. Add a "Go to Advanced Composition" button at the bottom of the quick reply window so that they can use that if they want to go advanced.

  3. Consider adding a "quote" module to the left of the reply in classic mode.

  4. A classic view for the threads index would also be appropriate.

More later if the site works long enough to manage a post...

'Ending soon' category apparently includes everything ending - period--- ever; including 8 days from now. Please bring back 'Closing today'.

Unless you start spreading closing times throughout the day, we only need a list of those that end tonight. Not every single item up for auction in closing date sequence.

Someone REALLY needs to pull this up on a blackberry or iphone and see how impossible it is to read. It simply will not magnify big enough read without a supplemental magnifying glass, and the buttons are too small to hit AT ALL. I have little hands, and I had to use the extreme corner of my pinky just to pull up the forum....forget about changing pages - it ain't gonna happen. I hate to think what bidding is like. I know a LOT of people bid from their smartphones...that simply is NOT possible anymore.

They've been making changes and updates all day it seems (I see a number of suggestions, both mine and from other members have been implemented already) Depending on the changes and the back end software, some changes might not be possible to apply dynamically and they need to restart the database(s) for the changes to take effect.

We tested the site for about 3 weeks. The things that we found were addressed. Jumping the gun? I don't think so. No one tests out a site better than the users who are at it all the time. We'll get these things resolved in short order.

In three months, we'll look back and laugh at "CigarBid Trauma Day" ............... Hopefully!

I'm seeing updates and suggestions being implemented pretty quickly, which is completely in line with what I experienced when I worked with Gonz beta testing the then-new CI website a few years ago. In terms of speed of updates/fixes, I wish some of my colleagues were as expedient as some of Gonz's people are.

There seems to be a ways to go yet, but at least some things are improving.

PS: Can we please get the IMG tags back? At least that made things fun.

Interesting....

Shouldn't "My Topics" actually be MY Topics? In other words, threads I've actually posted in, not a list of every active thread in a specified period of time?

And yes, I know I can do that via the search function, but that's not the point.

I'm not sure what the fear or reason for shutting off the IMG tag was. Just handle it like any other forum that utilizes it and needs limits on what is permissible -Simply make it clear in the rules that the line is drawn at a certain point, say PG-13 & no nudity for example, and that any violators will have their post edited and repeat violators will be sanctioned. and, if violations continue after being warned a few times and then sanctioned, then posting privileges will be revoked.

And the URL tag, It would actually be kind of a nice thing to be able to simply click on a url when someone is talking about an auction or a certain cigar at CI or a link to a news article, instead of having to highlight and copy / paste into a new window (or highlight and left-click open address/url if your browser supports that feature).

I think that the overriding concept is that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. One nude photo can be cached somewhere, and cause a whole lotta problems for CBID / CI.

Thus, if you moderate them before they get posted, it avoids a lot of potential legal problems.

Subscriptions should be the next level of filtering. I should be able to selectively subscribe to threads by choice. I should not have to subscribe to every thread I've posted in just to get a listing of my threads when I chose "My Threads".

Filtering options should be, at the very least, as follows-

  • Threads I've started

  • Threads I've posted into

  • Threads I've subscribed to (AKA watched topics)- regardless of if I've posted in them, allowing a user the option of using this as a manual toggle to follow certain threads

  • Threads changed within a certain period of time

  • New threads in a particular forum area

i still think you should axe the whole picture approval process and let people just imbed images. Make the rules clear and ban people who violate. I'm on several forums where i haven't seen a nude pic pop up in months, and some even years. Every once in a blue moon you get a retard who does it just to do it, and it gets flagged so quickly.

lol, the word re*tard is censored?

how about a profile option that toggles censorship. Make it censored by default, especially for guests viewing the site, but once you're a member, you accept the risk to turn of the censoring.

it was a rhetorical question Jeff.

Having been admining forums for a number of years, I'm fairly familiar with that concept, problem is, that's a big slope and there are many things can cause trouble. If that's what truly worries you, don't have a forum.

But I do understand if that's their choice on how it's going to be.
