EcoDiesel, bitches!
The half ton diesels would work well for me 96% of the time.
But I just can't bring myself to use a half ton for hauling 8-10k lbs over 1500 miles round trip when I'm pulling the Gridlife trailer. With weight distribution I'm sure it would do it. But last year after a tire blowout on the trailer I found myself coming down the mountains without trailer brakes and I sure was glad I had a 3/4 ton chassis to slow everything down. Plus, every new camper we've really liked has been in the 8-10klb range, so I think I'll be towing a lot more weight a lot more often whenever we do pull the trigger on a new camper. Right now at 6klbs I can tow it with anything really.
I just used my dad's half ton after I blew the tranny (GMC Sierra with the 6.2L) and it towed my camper well with the weight distribution hitch. It had plenty of power but it didn't have the chassis. Could feel some flex, and definitely relied on the trailer brakes more than in my truck. Plus got significantly worse towing mileage than my HD truck. (8 vs 10) But unloaded, we took his truck to Florida and got 22mpg over the 2000+ mile round trip. Premium 93 octane mind you, but still better than mine that gets 10 loaded and 11 unloaded.
The overall cost of a diesel, even in a 3/4 or 1 ton, is hard to swallow. Up front is a huge premium and then there's higher cost for oil changes, DEF, fuel filters, exhaust particulate filter etc. I don't think at present that the diesel vs gas is an argument of economy as much as it's gonna tow nicer with the diesel. With the next generation of gasoline HD trucks coming out this/next year I'd like to see what comes out. I would like to have a diesel 1 ton, but I do have to argue against the cost premium.
Student loans will be paid off by the end of this year. That frees up $680/mo. Maybe I'll spring for the GMC 3500 Denali Duramax dually.
