Another gray day here in north central MA. Low 40's with a chance of showers later on. Today is my Sat from "work" and next school term starts tomorrow.

Prolly just layabout watch a movie, nap, football. Gotta buy my books and probably check in on the syllabus to see what's in store for this term.

- Computing as a Service: Looks like another class on cloud based systems and Internet of Things (IoT).
- User-Centered System Design and Evaluation: Looks like another class on IT applications, systems and design focused from the user perspective side of things.

First of the year, so go through my spreadsheet and re-balance some holdings in my play brokerage account for tomorrow's trades.

Got a new work phone yesterday that wasn't fully set up so maybe look into that. Gotta download apps and get stuff transferred over to it. Might have to call for tech support since there's a couple apps where I'll need their authorization to install them.

Dog walk is postponed until further notice. Or until he gets outa bed and gives me the "Hey, jackass... I gotta poop" look.

I prefer something that is hands on and not something where I have to spend a majority of the day in meetings and BS.

I'll be a new grad so I'll be low on the totem pole in this new environment which is fine by me. Local IT help desk grunt, network maintenance, day to day average fix it guy.

I haven't looked into what's out there in my area yet, I still have about 9 months before I graduate. It's a dynamic field and even more so in the last few years with the COVID thing.

Time will tell. Probably will only make half of what I did money wise in my previous career and I'm OK with that. It's not all about money.

I do miss the engineering challenges and stuff though from my previous work - I learned a ton and loved taking on new projects and watch blossom to completion.

Maybe I land something where I can do both. Maybe there's something out there where I can use product/process engineering experience (I loved this stuff - Lean Mfg really sunk it's claws into me) and also be an asset doing some IT work. Experienced engineer, rookie IT dude looking to learn more.

I always kept a can of starting fluid on hand if my snow blower hesitated to start after a couple of pulls.

Part of me kinda misses dressing up in a few layers topped with an 80's snowmobile suit and some heavy boots to go blow snow for 2 hours. The end of the driveway and around the mail box after the plows went by was especially fun {sarcasm}. Then shoveling the stairs on the front porch and clearing off the back deck only to do it again later

The other part of me looks back and dope slaps me. There are some perks with condo/apartment living. One is not having to worry about clearing snow anymore.

Furnace took a chit.

Blower motor would just hum and not start.

Figured it had to be the capacitor. I had a spare 10uf cap so I threw it in before teardown to get to the start cap. That of course didn't fix it. Didn't think it would, but that was a 10 minute job with parts leftover from the camper.

Took apart my pressure washer to steal the start cap from that. Took apart the blower assembly and that didn't work. Noticed a lot of grease splatter/staining on the backside of the motor. Sealed bearings going out. Lubed em up, took pictures of the info plate on the motor and put it back together. Running reasonably well now.

Found an exact replacement motor online for $300, should be here Tuesday. Hopefully the current motor holds up and I'm not mandated over at work for another 24 hour shift. Starting slowly, but running much more quietly.

Fell asleep on the couch downstairs at some point. Woke up really cold despite having a blanket over me, and I always wear a light jacket in the house (keep it at 65 day 63 night) and the cat was curled up on my belly - he has voluntarily sat on my lap maybe a dozen times in 15 years.

Thermostat upstairs reading 52F.

Turned the furnace switch off, then back on. It's working again.

I just need this bitch to hold out till Tuesday. I talked to my HVAC dude, he said an emergency service call for a blower motor gonna be $1k plus and no guarantee of having the parts on hand but I can rent electric heaters until they get the parts... I did call a supply house a half hour north of me and they have one in stock but they don't sell retail. So worst case I can pay $1k plus and have it done.

But I can do that all myself. Butt... I go back to work for a week tonight. I don't know if I'm going to rent some heaters today for justin case or if I want to gamble on the furnace...

Wife did say "see, this is why I don't want you to go take travel contracts" My counter was if I'm making $5k/week the emergency hvac repair call would not be a difficult decision.

Checked local rental places online. Nobody open right now. Closest place says I can't start rental contract online till 1/6. Next one is 1/4. If I drive to Chicago there's a place I can get a few heaters today, but would be $600ish to rent till Thursday. Prices are mid $20's per day on the closer places. 3 days covers buying new. Plus I would then have them on hand for next time. Last winter the heat went out and I managed to get through with some duct tape and jumper wires to bypass safety stuff until I got parts.

I have Home Depot gift cards in my wallet. I'm gonna buy two 1500w radiant heaters and put them in the basement. Keep the pipes from freezing and hopefully keep the upstairs 50+

I turned up the garage furnace to 65. I can open the two doors to the garages and put a couple box fans in the doorway to help heat the house too. But keeping the well lines and stuff from freezing is number 1.

When I got the furnace installed I was unemployed and had them install a cheap mobile home furnace. He did warn me I wouldn't get 10 years from it, but I was already 40k in the hole on credit and the $1500 furnace was easier to take than the $3500 furnace. I've not yet spent that much repairing it but getting close. Hopefully I can get through to the spring and call him out for a 20 year furnace during their slow months. I'm gonna put this old furnace in the garage. I'm afraid of what's coming with more parts shortages and stuff.

Home Depot open now, heading there.

Well it's 30 damn degrees outside... so I'm glad I had my HVAC system replaced in 2020. It was 20 years old.

A mildly cool 65 inside.

Mornin' dudes... good luck Danm. Hope ya find what you need.

This happens every year with ours. Some branches as big as 2" have snapped due to the weight. Just now starting to pick some but most look like they won't be fully ripe for another month or more. Wife slices and freezes the lemons for summertime use in drinks. We give boxes of lemons to the neighbors and still have enough to put more boxes out on the front yard with a FREE sign each year. The crop is uuuuuge again this year but the lemons are smaller than last year.

Bought 3 radiant heaters. Gonna leave em boxed up until/unless I need em, would prefer to return them unneeded. Furnace running ok when I got home. Showed the wife how to reset the furnace and told her to wake me up if that doesn't work.

Back to work for a week.

I never have a heat issue in the winter but sure have had a recurrent cold problem with the AC in the summer months. Think I have it fixed finally after about 5-6 episodes last July-Aug of auto shut-offs during 110 degree days. Had the owner of the company come out with his top tech after so many other techs just patched the problem temporarily.

It's a cold 38 out right now but going up to a sunny 60+ today and may even get to 70 by the end of the week.

Good luck danm. Got anything that will burn?

Well that didn't last long.

House filled with blower motor smoke.

Putting the electrics to work.

5°F outside right now.

Garage furnace cranked up to 70 and put a fan to blow in from the far side of the house. Moved the CO detector to that hallway

Good Monday Morning! It's a very windy 45° on the way to 53° today.

My wife's bestie is here helping her take down Christmas decorations and to organize/consolidate her Christmas stuff. Finger crossed for fewer than a dozen large storage tubs.

Nothing real going on today. Waiting for my plumber to call to say he is on his way to fix a stuck shower valve, check out a toilet, stop the "water hammer" on another toilet, install a new kitchen faucet and remove and bury the pipes for the laundry tub we have never really used so we can put a huge cabinet or shelves in the alcove it sits in. He has one job to finish and then can get it all done. No using the same company for almost 15 years now. They do good work and are fast. Bet this will cost me $300.

In the arms of the angel
Fly away from here
From this dark cold hotel room
And the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage
Of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of the angel
May you find some comfort here
